I guess it really just boils down to preference: sterile technique is a bit trickier initially, but condition maintenance seems a lot easier

Self :facepalm3:

As I re-read it I think I misunderstood you. I thought you were comparing cakes to grains, but it looks like you were comparing fruiting individual cakes vs bulking them. Sorry bout that. I do agree, ime individual cakes need a little babysitting while fruiting, the tubs are pretty much self contained.

I dont think theres anything wrong with starting with cakes. It's a relatively simple and low cost method to see the lifecycles of the mushrooms.

If you like growing then you will naturally advance at your own pace. PC, agar, grains, tubs and such.

I'm just saying that i think bulk is just as well (or better) starting point... I kill some shoeboxes and tubs, but have the hardest time with cakes  JMO though...

I confess I spent part of my Friday evening in Dunelm and B&M looking in the storage sections for tubs and also sniffing scented candles #froot!!!

Transferred some clean cultures to grain for the first time in about 5 months. Feels good to loosen up all the cobwebs

Dudes, I am busting my ass and getting nothing done. I'm getting cagey AF! I used to be pretty
good about having my pipeline pretty full...so I was always spawnin' and always harvestin'. Now
it seems like I am just staring at grain jars and plates. FUCK!

Now I have 25 quarts of sterilized substrate staring at me and I'm scared to inoculate it! Hahaha!

It took me almost a year to learn I should only cut my Parafilm 2/3rds of the way, then tear the rest of the way.. Soo much easier to peel off the film with gloved hands.

I go all the way around, hold it in place with my thumb, and cut across the bottom real shallow  (10ยฐmaybe)and stick about an inch to the top...

It's pretty easy to, just run my fingertips and catch the loose film on the bottom

No man I'm talking about when you cut your section off the roll..
Strait cut VS cut and pull/tear... Look how much easier it is to peel off the protective cover with gloves on

That looks like saran wrap/plastic wrap. I've got parafilm but have not become a fan yet, still prefer my plastic wrap

Cut 2 squares...then cut those in half. Wrap 2 plates.

That's a great idea.  I struggled for a little bit with the separation.  I developed this corner stretch technique.  Just pinch the corner and pull. Took a few tries untill I got the pressure right.

I do 3.5 squares per plate(two wraps), it covers up and protects labeling from alcohol wipes.

I used to run only two squares, but I had issues with my parafilm breaking after about a week, where the two halves of plate meet.  Now I run 3.5 so it goes around a little more then two full times.
