I confess I managed to totally screw up 40 pasty plates. I think I forgot to pc them:wow:

Noc'd them up 4 days ago and everyone of them had a plethora of nasties in them, never before have I done such a thing or had so many plates fail at once. Ever!

Same thing almost happened to me! I made some agar, put it in a media bottle and stored it
in the fridge. Next day....time to pour some plates! Caught myself right before I started.

I confess if I had a close myco interested friend that lived in my neighborhood I'd give 10 quarts of spawn away. This is probably a regular occurrence for noob science geeks like myself but I got so caught up I got cray cray and can hardly keep up with plates, LC, grains, spawn, CVG, tubs, fruits and prints.

I was watching some wilderness survival film on Reddit one night and saw people harvesting off mushroom logs and I thought the idea was so ridiculous I called bullshit and started googling and that's what led me to this hobby.

My first grow was a shiitake log grow I painstakingly researched and used an enormous limb off my neighbors tree as the logs. If you enjoy reading novels you  can check out my first post noobness and learn more than u want about shiitake logs here
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24186697

Enjoyed the research so much I started making pf cakes with my leftover shiitake dowels and then on and on...

Fast forward 13 months, I've had to move these logs probably ten times with life and all it's changes. It's become a chore since I've progressed into making enriched shiotake blocks and having better harvests that way anyway.

But there's always something cool about your first project, what got you into the hobby you know, I clearly remember this grainy 1970s wilderness survival militia video whatever it was, burly man with blue jeans and red suspenders and no shirt chest hair flapping in the wind holding a four foot shiitake log with fat brown caps all over it, I laughed and yelled bullshit so hard like it was a gag in one of those Scary Movie spoof videos.

So today I was soaking the logs in five gallon buckets this morning and I think, wow this feels weird. When's the last time I did this? And I'd had a sneaking suspicion something was wrong because my research said I should have seem the white mottling at the ends of the logs showing how far colonized it was ; though to be fair the ends were still covered in wax which is the goal to prevent foreign spores from becoming competitors.

Took some doing, but I cut two logs in half just for a look see.

LOL!!!!

So... Not colonized at all? basically killed it within the first month and I've been hauling these heavy fuckers around and soaking them for a year for nothing??

LOL!!!

I should add I just planted like 150 SQ feet of blooms and shrubs and flowers amnd the first ones I almost killed, they still haven't recovered a month later, new leaf growth everywhere amd I'm hoping the lantana's will blo again in a month or so

Definitely an under estimation of the perpetual wind here in the coastal bend of Texas and the extreme heat and aridness. Even on an overcast day the whipping wind dries everything. I've learned so much in this year, shit every month

Better yet, triumphantly holding a shittake block in the air!

I'm still here. I just took a bit of a break from everything for a week. It was really exhausting. Just getting everything in order. Tonight is the night! I'm starting all my cultures over. It's nice to have such a huge amount of room now. I'm still deciding which cubes I want to work with. Definitely an albino one for sure. I'm thinking of giving the APE another go.

Yes good to see you on TBC, I'm on my first APE go around too, the petri in my sig is one of many I put to grain a few weeks back, almost ready.  I think a few qaurts are stalling because I made my grains too dry that run but got a few more looking better, still a little slow  :oldman:  I've also got Red Boys going to grain with Pan. Jam. This week and tomorrow I'm swiping some plates to germ some PF Red spore, CRS, & some Xupari tomorrow after I make some agar for them

Also I now have a legit confession. I confess that I clearly need to pay more attention. My whole apartment has baseboard heating except for the 8x10 closet which also has a window for some convenient and unknown reason. Most likely from whatever renovation covered the place in wood paneling way back when. White painted wood paneling isn't that sexy BTW. Anyways I was keeping the door closed and didn't realize it was about 5-10 degrees colder than the rest of the house. I was wondering why nothing was happening in the jars. I went in there tonight and a blast of icy air hit me. I better leave the door open when I am alone from now on to make sure it stays at 70 at least in there. But at least I'm not sitting here wondering if my LC was bad. I see some growth in the jars finally.

So I've chosen Columbian rust spore, LUCY, APE and this giant mystery print that's been sitting around. I think it's either PESA or KSSS.

Also I confess I really need a second cooker. This one only holds 9 and only 7 really if you are hydrating the grain during the PC cycle because a lot of the water steams out when they are turned sideways. I am going to go for a Presto next time.
