I'll probably need spores eventually but I don't even have a grow space set up or all equipment to get any growing done at this point. I've just been researching how to grow edible mushrooms but since finding shrooms is next to impossible where I live I might have to do a small grow in order to try them.
edit: Also I'm rather poor right so it takes a long time to gather items for anything I want to do.

PF Tek is incredibly cheap and one small grow with a handful of cakes will provide you with enough medicine to last you for a while.

You could do PF tek, as it allows you to steam the cakes. You could get that going for maybe $50.
Supplies needed are
-Perlite -Vermiculite -Brown Rice flower -Tub to make the Shot Gun Fruiting Chamber, that the perlite goes in. -Some jars or PP5 grade small plastic containers. You can get 8, 4oz glad mini rounds for under $3 at Wal-Mart. Kerr brand wide mouth half pints would work better. The mini rounds would be smaller cakes and yield less per cake. Those wide mouth half pints are about $8-9 for 12 at Wal-Mart as well.
That's all I can think of right now. O yea another tub to make your still air box.

Yeah I was gonna use PF for my first oyster mushrooms and I definitely don't need or want to do a lot of cubes. I might actually have most of what I need to get started just need a few more things and spores.

Should you all ready have a pressure cooker, use it for your cakes as it will kill more shit. I PC mine, but I also use full pint sized jars with grains. But it will improve your odds.

I confess I have repurposed my old double edged razors. I break them in half and use them to cut thin slices of a specimen to mount on slides. I was really impressed with the quality and ease of getting really thin samples. I will never use a conventional scalpel again when prepping slides. However, I must admit this isn't my idea, I read it somewhere here on shroomery. Whomever came upwith it deserves the credit.

I have a PC but it doesn't have a gauge on it all it has is a spin top gas release valve so it never blows up. I think even if I steam sterilize 10 in a normal pot from what I've read 2 or 3 usually get contaminated after inoculation or that could just be peoples bad sterile tek. either way I like that success rate over none.

I would use the PC and go for 90 min. It will still be better than only steaming. My PC is similar, no gauge, I just know it goes to 15PSI from the box it came in.
With cakes contaminating, it is usually something that was in the syringe. NO spore syringe is 100% clean. They ALL carry bacteria and possibly mold.

Yeah you're right. Even if it doesn't go to 15 psi it'll still be better than a normal pot. Thanks for all the help and tips Hatter

Your welcome, I really hope you get some fruits your 1st go. Just an FYI, with a PC, that you know goes to 15psi, you can use grains instead of flour. I have used whole brown rice and even oats, they just HAVE to be pressure cooked though.
Ziran have a good, modern PF tek you may want to follow.

I confess, after my first bulk grow, I'll never do another pf tek for any kind of mushrooms active or edible. I feel like I get back more for my time with bulk.

And i confess ive never made a pf cake in my life. All or nothing went right to grains. There was a major learning curve with alot of trich but it all worked out in the end.

I confess im waiting patiently to see how my cornmeal plates perform in blender/blenderless slurry. For whatever reason agar 2 grain stalls out for me. I get a big mycelium ball of birdseed and then no growth. Frustrating.
Ps aint nothing wrong with pf tek. In fact pf tek to grain is one of the fastest inoculation methods for grains.

Agar to grain and g2g all will stall without a shake IME...I did a side by side of shake/no shake...G2G jars that I shook at 20% or about 4 days from transfer finish by day 7 or 8. Same culture unshook took 3 weeks...Same with Agar masters.
Shaking really helps things here.

If I don't need the jars right away I will hold off on shaking them. I use the shake to speed up growth when needed. But right now I still got to spawn some more tubs, lol. I still need to figure out what I want to do with my 40 Pint sized cakes. Since all came from a clean clone LC I may try spawning them to a big dumb ass grow for the fuck of it.

You'll get bored. Trust me.
I have noticed that if I let my jars colonize past 30% they take forever to finish up. Where as 20% kicks ass and is done within the week

Tom i know you are obviously a big fan of slurry. Have you ever messed with cornmeal plates ? and did you ever try blenderless cornmeal plate slurry? I only have a single blender attachment right now thats limiting the amount of jars i can use as inoculant.
