bran is really the only thing that may "top" brf being that it is more nutrtitous with a great consistency but this means more consolidation needed and maybe a tad more expensive

I've only found wheat bran in 50 pound bags for about 13$. Lasts a while depending on at what volume one uses it at.

WTF. Where did you get bags of wheat bran for 13 lbs. for 50. Uggh. I can buy it in small quantities but it's like 1.00 a lb. They sell two lb. bags for 2.00 of the Bobs Red mill at the lot store but I can get 1.00 off coupons and get it as low as 50 cents a lb at the cheapest. I think I can get buckwheat hulls pretty damn cheap. Anyone ever try those?

Local ma and pa cattle feed. It's for horses. If you have a tractor supply near you check them.

Just bought 20kg of feed bran for 20 bucks Canadian. Not much different than the price of brown rice. I may use some of it for cakes but it’s intended for some large gourmet blocks as a sawdust supplement.
I got my bran at a hobby farm supply store so I’m sure the price could be beat if I drive to a little cow-town two hours away.
I confess I try cubes on everything eventually.

So it looks like I can get feed near me. I had no idea bran was animal feed and animal feed is also hulls. I'm pretty stoked to have a store near me that sells everything I need to grow mushrooms. I don't live in an area with a lot of farms so it's a bit weird the store exists where it does but I guess it's for hobby farmers or people with small farms. If I'm going to buy in this kind of quantity I'll have to add DE to keep the bugs from making a home it. I got the kitty on top of rodents. It sure saves on shipping being able to Uber all this shit home.
Oh and I just got off my ass and cooked half a block of coir for the mushies. Decided to not do two shoeboxes and just put both jars in a 27qt to create a higher spawn to sub ratio. I'm going to be smart and let it cool in the cooler overnight so it can cook a bit longer and not be warm when I use it. How the fuck is it that I can grow tons of beautiful fucking edibles which are supposed to be harder but I'm cursed with fucking up cubes. I mean I'm growing big ass fantastic oysters and lions mane. Bit it's like the mushroom gods don't wamnt me to have all the cubes. I was doing good for awhile too. I'm crossing my fingers it's all going to work out now that I have clean spawn. Maybe I'll get a few nice ones to clone out of this tub.

LizardWizard said: Confession: my new medicine is Amanita Muscaria. This noon I found one, then went to search online, found out it helps in Lyme disease, went out for another search, found 3 more fresh specimens, and after being miserable, tired, not being able to think, for months on end, I just experienced my first symptomfree 3 hours. I was even feeling very warm after taking off a bunch of clothing and going outside. It's pretty damn cold out right now, yet walking outside with just pants, tshirt and sweater felt awesome. No cold at all. Still warm! I think I might be in love...
Hey Lizard I have Lyme disease like you and think I owe my life to fly agaric. It's not dangerous, as long as you know what you're doing. I've been taking it every day for several years now. Some Siberian native peoples take it every day.
I mostly microdose. If you're taking larger amounts, be aware it's a deliriant rather than a hallucinogen, and IME can be harder to remember the ordinary world.
I'd recommend making a tincture as well (normal drinking vodka is fine). It's brilliant for pain - just apply a few drops to where it hurts. It's also great to have a few drops under the tongue to increase cognition/memory/energy. I never go out without some in my pocket.
Clone some flesh onto agar!
Feel free to PM me

Isn't bran just the outer hull or is it flower without the hull removed?

You really don't need to supplement with anything for Oysters if you are using grain spawn...There's plenty there nutrition wise to get max BE.

The idea with supplementing bulk for edibles is so you can use less spawn.

I confess I am way more excited about this than I probably should be. Being stuck in bed isn't so bad when you get to look at this across the room. Look at those oysters go. The lions mane is exceeding my expectations as well. Adding slightly more coop poop to the oysters has has accelerated their growth more than last time. I use coop poop as an added nitrogen source. And yes the oysters as expected ate all the yeast. Oysters versus yeast experiment 2 has worked. Unfortunately I am out of this culture so I can't reproduce this for a third time. I may someday experiment more with oysters grown in conjunction with different yeasts since their isn't a lot of research on it. It's basically a free nitrogen source that multiplies and oysters eat yeast, nematodes and who knows what else they are capable of parasitizing off of for a nitrogen or other nutritional source. This fascinates me from a cultivation standpoint. Imagine a nitrogen source that grows in vitro that makes the grow faster and stronger. This could save so much money on supplementation. And since I am lazy I add the same substrate to my lions mane. Yes they love it too and I don't have to add extra hardwood chips to my lions mane for it to thrive. Just some bran and a dash of coop poop. Who knew. So simple.
I am now curious to see what other mushrooms like this mixture. Maitake seems like it's in my future. Also I have this turkey tail culture I've been dying to try.

It might help to add the photo I was going to add to show you how fast they were growing. The one on the left is lions mane. It's moving pretty fast but of course not as fast as the oysters. Also lions mane never really consolidates on rye for me so I always drop it once all the rye is lightly covered. This means a lot less mycelium being mixed in and they are 8 hours behind the oysters ib being bagged. One of these days I'll stop feeding my giant bag of WBS to the ducks and give it a try for my lions mane. It's just rye is so easy to use and clean and also cheaper in my parts. I figure why mess with what's working for now.
Also my hardwood bags always get real dark when I sterilize them. DO you think it's the coop poop melting and mixing into the substrate causing this or are spawn bags usually this dark?

Just noticed all the really bright white specks. The bags are wrinkly and reflecting all sorts of colors from the lash and making bright white highlights. Also the yellow spot on one bag is a clump of rye that's mushy from being broken down and not contamination.

I confess I have the worst luck sometimes, my patch in the woods was bulldozed today, the state put a fire lane right over top of it. I just hope the jar of spawn I kept is just as good. They were all made from the same plate. Any opinions on whether or not the potency will be similar since the jars were all from the same mycelium.
