crowseed said: I confess I've failed to protect my grows from mice. The other day I found a grain jar with a chewed up EZ felt filter. Then I was watering a SGFC with a watering can but the spout got blocked so I took the rose off the end. It looked like leaves blocking the spout and poking out so I put it in my mouth and blew but out shot a mouse (dead) not leaves. It was a while before the taste went away.
What the fuck dude that is disgusting! So you tasted the dead mouse? How'd it taste?
Sounds like sucking not blowing.

TBC, I have used feline pine cat litter pellets before to make oyster spawn in a closed ziplock bag. I used one of Rush Wayne's recipes for 12 minute spawn. It's pretty old stuff and incorporates peroxide but I'm thinking it can be done w/o peroxide if the work was done in a glove box. It's super easy, just add your pellets, gyp, lime, and a tiny bit of powdered milk into a gallon freezer bag, add the right amount of water to get field capacity and peroxide if you are gonna do that, and zip it closed w most of the air out of the bag. After the pellets turn to sawdust throw the ziplock into a pot of boiling water for 12 minutes (this could be the 8 minute spawn recipe, I can't remember ) pull it back out of the water to cool, inoculate w a colonized agar wedge and then you are done. My oyster bags were MS to agar (almost no transfers because I didn't know what I was doing) to enriched sawdust and took about a month to fully colonize.
EDIT: This isn't a plug to help RW make money. I'm sure RW's manuals are still online somewhere if anyone is interested in them. I originally purchased them but after loosing my paper copies I found copies for free on the web. They are called Growing Mushrooms The Easy Way volumes 1 & 2.

Oh. I wasn't saying I don't knoww hat to do with the spawn. I'd be totally lying if I said that. I was saying I'm in too much pain to do the things I need to do with it and these jars. But thanks!
And yay! I wasn't going totally fucking nuts. There was a bug on shroomerys end and I submitted a ticket and they finally fixed it. I'm glad because I almost didn't feel like using the site anymore it had gotten so bad.

I suppose I was smelling it through my mouth rather than actually tasting it - luckily I did blow and not suck! It was just that dead animal smell/taste. Quite fresh fortunately.
I can't smell the mouse in the mushroom lab (shed) anymore, so I think it was the mouse that defiled my grain jar that drowned in the watering can in the polytunnel.
The oats are I think safe - I have the lid upside-down so the spider babies don't get squashed. It's not impossible for a mouse to get in, but this one didn't manage it, so I'm a bit more relaxed about it now.
There's no way I'm squashing the babies. The mother was so brave and didn't abandon the nest whenever I went to get oats, before she wove herself in with them, wove bits of leaves and things in as well, so I have to respect her spirit. Besides I might need the babies to keep the fungus gnats down in the spring. I'm off grid and in the midst of nature, so I have to work with it really.
I've learned to look to see what something is before I put it in my mouth though!
BlackCat, have you tried fly agaric tincture on your back? I've seen it work miracles on people (myself included). It can remove both pain and spasm in a moment - the muscimol mimics GABA. Magic stuff. Oh, and don't worry about the oyster spawn. If it's too hard to shake, just dig it out with a spoon and it'll be fine.

Have you considered buying a new bag of oats? My policy with spiders is just leave them alone, and they leave you alone.

I confess these guys are taking up my mushroom time. I've been so busy setting up their 55 gallon tank that I feel like I'm neglecting my other babies haha.

I confess that ... this year I'm taking a leap of faith and letting folk on the Shroomery donate to my American Cancer Society fundraiser. I'm just going to say I've been doing this for almost ten years to honor my Dad (and some relatives) who I lost to cancer, and some good friends who have survived cancer... and hell Ol' Psilo has had skin cancer chopped out of his hide a couple of times.

Anyway... If you have 5 dollars (or more) to spare send me a PM for a link to my fundraiser. No offense, but since I will be identified by the fundraiser I will only send the link to folks who have been around a while.

I confess that after buying all the supplies to set up my first grow I suddenly decided to get cheap and didn't buy a dehydrator. I ended up taking the screen off my sliding glass door and propped it up on two cardboard boxes in order to fit a fan underneath.

I confess that I too have had several loved ones deal w cancer. Some won, some lost, and some are still fighting. Good luck w your fundraiser Psilo! That's a noble idea. I understand why you would want to be selective about sending your fundraiser link, so I'm not even going to ask. No offense taken. I'm pretty broke anyway and am sure my positive vibes toward your goal will go much farther than any $ amount that I could comfortably spare.

I confess that I told an oncologist I know that I'm trying to grow my own immune modulating and cancer fighting mushrooms. Right now I'm working on ganoderma sessile, tramets versacolor, and hericium. They told me that if I bring in a mushroom, they will send it off to a state university mycology department and tell me exactly what my mushroom has in it. I confess, I'm super excited over this idea.
