I confess I almost ate oysters from by the river. I even brushed them off and cleaned them up. Then I was like if I can't eat fish from here what makes me think I can eat these oysters. But damn they looked nice. It was really tempting.
Just realized I shouldn't have left them there. I should have cloned them.

It's in the city and there's a lot of runoff. So much that you can see it sometimes. And that's not counting the mysterious foam running down it all the time. I think they made sure the car wash stopped doing that because I finally complained about it this year. But yes. The sediment is still very polluted.

Oysters bioremediate pollutants by denaturing hydrocarbon bonds, turning them into clean food for the environment. I'd say they were perfectly edible. Please watch this video by mycologist Paul Stamets. He grew and ate oysters from a pile of diesel-fuel contaminated soil.

he's given that talk many, many times. there are multiple recordings of it on youtube. in some of them, he mentions they are edible and tasted amazing, in others, he doesn't mention it at all. the one I linked, he specifically states they were edible and delicious.

Hard to know where to stop trusting that guy. I mean hes obviously brilliant but also belives in a collective conscience of fungi, and wears the ugliest hat in the world just because it's made of a konk.
I would have cloned but not eaten those. Mushrooms don't break down heavy metals just concentrate them.

AFAIK the metals do not bioaccumulate in the fruit bodies. There have been a few tests on pleurotus that I'm aware of and the only thing to my knowledge that accumulates in the fruits was mercury.

Heh. Yes. Mercury. One of many heavy metals accumulated in the sediment of this old factory and mill city. Better safe than sorry. Still have 3 lbs. of hens and 4 lbs. of chickens left. Plus who knows if one of the alkies who hang out by the river pissed on em.

I Confess: At what point does one have a lifetimes worth of shroom? On one hand I wish I knew enough people to gift them to, but on the other I'm glad I don't. You know, loose lips and what not.
My brats are getting older and starting to figure out what's up. They talk to friends no matter what. It sucks that I have to sneak around my own damn house to do something i like to do. Jus cuz dem lawz.
I think I'm going to start brewing small batches of beer as a hobby and put this one down for a bit.
Someone said the other day something along the lines of "cultivating mushrooms is a solitary mistress"
Damned if that ain't true...

Nice confession Papa" I feel your pain ... well I used to. Sneaking around my own home to hide it from the kids. The "kids" are now 20 and 17 almost 18 and they know so I don't worry so much.
However, every once in a while I tell them that no matter how "cool" they think their friends are that they can't control who they will talk in front of and Dad could easily locked up for a long for my personal grow (I grow to help my wife with her depression... and because I love mush cult) if their friends said something in front of the wrong person.
Oysters, Black Poplar, and Shitake all day! Actually I just tell them never to mention it because for any young person mushroom = Shrooms!
