Wheat straw shouldn't stink.  What's your wheat straw prep?  Also if WBS, or any grain for that matter wasn't soaked for 24 hours it would not stink during sterilization.  Try a no soak, heat treatment Tek for grains/seed if said grains smell rancid during sterilization.

Hpoo shouldn't smell either, I love the smell actually. Not when fresh of course, but when properly field aged, just smells like good old fertile soil.

And why would you have to flip the wedge mycelium side down? The mycelium will just eat up the transfer wedge and start the new plate on it's own as well...

I would not flip the wedge upside down so it gets better GE.

Not to me it isn't. It's not NOT either, I just don't care how the wedge is placed on the new plate. I like it to be in the middle, but that's about as much fucks I'm willing to give

Don't have that much bacterial issues to deal with, and bacteria usually don't climb up anyway, so if you do get bacteria, you could always just transfer the top of the by now colonized wedge to the next plate, leaving the bacteria behind

Oh and having sattelite colonies because the wedge has been pushed around over the new plate isn't exactly a good thing either (possible uneven growth making contams harder to spot). Neither is taking your sweet time to put the wedge in the "right" position (extended opening time and more movement)

I love the smell of sterilized wheat. Much better than any other grain. One more reason I love wheat.

The smell of wheat is so amazing it becomes a bit annoying sometimes if you can't eat shit with wheat. I've gotten completely used to it, but when I smell those freshly baked pastries walking past a bakery, god I'd love to sink my teeth in one of those. The painful consequences of gluten intolerance aren't worth it though.

I'm usually pretty ok with not getting satellite colonies and centering it. It's just not easy and you have to be fast and precise. I do it with suspicious plates especially. If I accidentally drop a wedge in the wrong place then that's where it's going to stay. Don't move my wedges for that reason. What really messes up a plate is if extra moisture condenses and you don't realize it and move the plate and the water runs across it. Luckily I don't have that issue anymore with my new lids. But it turns into a bunch of crazy fuzzy white mycelium dots or some kind of white film will grow. What the fuck is that white film anyways?

That white film is bacteria, but if the wegde you trasnferred was clean you should not see that even after moving the wedge all over the plate.

I don't think the Hpoo or straw stinks it's my family who protests the earthy smell.
They both just have pungent smells.

Well seasoned HPOO smells like rich earth / humus
Straw smells like cured grass.

I love these smells, but they are strong for my less "earthy" family.

My daughter often complains about the smell of whole oats boiling. Completely harmless smell to me!

Lol, my wife hates all of the smells except the mushroom smell. She hates the smell of running the PC, the smell of coir being hydrated, if I was to bring horse shit in the house, it would be a war.

Only smell in this hobby that I find overwhelming is the fully loaded dehydrator.
