I confess, this is My first mono grow and I have no clue what I'm doing. Any suggestions on how to fill the holes?

Poly fill, the shit in pillows, or use micropore tape over the holes

I just stuffed polyfill. Is micro pore better? I've had it just laying around and never use it. And with polyfill, how do you initiate fruiting

I wanted to confess that the unmodded plastic lids for no pour agar work great.

I keep my lids screwed on loose for pc and tight afterwards as agar doesn't need ge.

I also wrap the edge of my no pour with saran wrap to keep the container and lids clean for future transfers. And I put them in ziplocs bags or ice bags until needed. All overboard but it's worth it for me.

I much prefer micropore tape but I originally learned to dial in with polyfil so it may have helped me adjust to the tape easier.

IMO if you can learn to use micropore you'll never go back. So sleek and easy and uniform! I reuse mine as well just soap and water over the surface to clean them and no more fuzzy mess everywhere from poly.

even EYA's pinky filters would be much better than poly. it just all comes down to knowing the right amount of FAE for your environment. You'll learn after a few tubs and messing with the airflow to get as much as possible without drying things out.

You take it out of the dark low CO2 environment you had it in and expose it to FAE or some jazz like that. Just stuff the holes make sure there is decent air circulation in the room a fan on low or something like that and put it somewhere clean.  I'm going to sort of guess all of those things sound about right.

Agar doesn't need GE? Is skeptical.

Washing micropore tape? I'm going to go now. :shockedpussy:

No They can have as much light through the whole life cycle. That has nothing to do with dialing in.

You can use a fan if needed but I think most would say it's unnecessary and may cause drying substrate issues...

I do use a fan in my room as the air is very stagnant without it.

Dialing in is keeping a lesser fae wetter environment while colonizing and pinning making sure to have a light layer of tiny droplets on the surface until you have a nice pinset and then giving ample fresh air without drying out the shrooms. The more fae in the end stages without drying out the better.

who has ever said agar needs ge?

what about petris wrapped in saran, is there any ge there?

Micropore tape doesn't just become dirty by using for monotub airflow.

If your tub was highly contammed you may want to change the tape but other than that the tape is easily cleaned just like any plastic surface in your tub. Any remaining dust of whatnot that may be trapped in the pores of the tape will never cause any problems, especially with clean spawn.

I've reused my tape maybe 10 times and still going and some were exposed to high levels of mold spores.

Yet not showing any difference as long as cleaned with soap and water.

Don't leave it in the dark during colonization. It will benefit from a steady light cycle throughout both colonization and fruiting

There actually is GE through saran wrap, you can notice it when certain species fruit on agar, they will search for air and crawl between the lid and dish, to try to come out past the saran. Plastic breathes, believe it or not. It's just very little. The mycelium feels it though.

Agar doesn't need MUCH gas exchange. But growing under vacuum might prove to be hard (they do need SOME air, and I doubt they would get enough from what oxygen is in the agar). Though a closed off jar without GE will probably have enough oxygen to run the whole plate.

especially in the 8 oz containers there is plenty of air/oxygen in the container to support full growth of the plate and then some.

I don't think there is ge happening on the plastic lids while screwed on tight but if there is it is filtered because I've never seen any test plates fail out of 50 over a couple months.

no need for ge on this type of container or even most no pour agar containbers. Maybe petris do because they have so little air?

I use them side by side with filtered lids as I have tons of grain jar lids with a sfd and micropore tape over a 1/4" hole. NO difference. as far as I can tell. I used to only have filtered lids with agar and only recently, a couple months ago or so, switched to unmodded. So maybe longterm  storage has an effect?

if you zoom in you can see the two different lids in that pic.

True Confession:

The Myconet runs deep. Went to a dance party on a Mesa in N NM last week- made a friend right off the bat and 5 hours later he introduced me to his friend - a friend I made at the Radical Mycology Cultivation Course last year in Albuquerque. In fact- other than MorePies- the only guy I kept in touch with.

This bond we make brings us together in the beautiful serendipity of quantum chaos.

My secret pride

"Behind closed doors"

I've put a lot of thought, effort, and time, in to building a small but efficient myco closet.  I find any excuse to open the door.  The pride is in the details.  It's not big nor fancy.  But it's my biggest pride accomplishment to this point in my myco journey.
