My secret pride is that I have yet to have a contam on my agar plates. I've only done about 100 so far and about 20 transfers, but I still feel pretty, pretty, pretty good about my SAB & sterile techniques. (Just jinxed myself)

I'm sure you've had something. You'd be surprised at the stuff you don't see that doesn't affect your cultures that much. But bravo for doing so well! If what you say is true you are off to a better start than me.
I've had a surprisingly low contamination rate for a beginner myself. I think obsessive amounts of rubbing alchohol wipes and brain damage from all the lysol has been key. I should do even better now that all my jars have plastic lids with drilled holes and SFD's.

I gotta ask, why did you modify your lids? plastic lids work fine without...

I confess I've been most likely growing a culture of mycogone from day one and not pans from the sketchy pan print. At least I learned something new. Going to keep watching it grow in the jar and then throw the whole jar out. It's in a sealed environment and I think it's a good learning tool. Also mycogone is actually pretty. It's just the worst thing ever in terms of contams. I know exactly what mycogone culture looks like. Guess it's pretty easy to fuck up growing pans when your not even growing pans to begin with.
But my cubes are still looking sexy. Starting to make hyphal knots more. Just need to start seeing some pins. I'm thinking a few more days if that.
And the PESA is clean. One more transfer possibly two just to be safe.

Unmodded lid is a fad. The mycology world runs on filters for a reason..They work well.

I wouldn't use it either, but that's because I tend to move my jars around a lot. I'd never dare moving them without tightening the lid first. But it seems to work for people just fine, so I don't see why it should really be an issue. It might be good to keep them in a sterilite or something to avoid air currents getting stuff in the jar.

Right, but you have never used either, so your opinion is based on mere speculation thus should be taken with many grains of salt. Thank you for playing though.

It's not based on speculation, it's based on the assumption that what works for others, will work for me. It might not be my preferred way of going about things, but it's not like that makes it impossible or anything.
Now the air current and moving jars thing, THAT is based on speculation, and on general SAB theory.

None of my agar vessels have air filters. I use regular petris with parafilm, and 125 / 250 ml glass jars with metal lids, I do put in a silicone SHIP port. If theres a vacuum I use a syringe filled with polyfil and micropored top as an "airport" to vent it. otherwise I only use filtered air exchange wholes on my 1/2 and 1 quart grain jars.
Is this a massive mistake?

True confession:
I had a friend seriously complain that I dry my shrooms too much. He said they were like eating sticks, and his friends apparently think the same. I'm sorry all they've ever come across is low quality shrooms
