Nice carvings! I know a guy who has a lot of chainsaw log carvings done by a friend of his who's really killer at it. I like carving wood myself too, but a chainsaw scares me a bit. I'll use it if I have to, but I'm always shitting myself while using it. The idea of the chain snapping really horrifies me.

So glad I found this thread! Wonderful! Newbies need to see that every experienced person started off somewhere. For me it was 2006-2010 (before I joined this site). From the drip shield in the aquarium, to the heated water incubation dub tub kept in the dark, to my "sterile technique" being doing inoculations in PFTek by opening the oven halfway, pulling out the rack, setting the 1/2 pint BRF jars on it and inoculate in the heat flow. Oddly enough I was intelligent enough to alcohol flame the needle (more because my dad is a Marine and mom a nurse than my infantile grasp on Mycology)- so there was some success. But dear lord so much failure. But if you truly take part in each step, if you live in that moment where it's just you and your mycelium and the cleanest area you've ever had inside your cluttered house, and you take note of all of your actions and compare them with your research and observe - I can't stress that enough- observe the changes in your fungi- they will tell you what they need- you just need to know how to listen.
So from my first stumbles eventually came my triumphs and moments of self actualization - for I did something I was truly proud of. Now- I am working on starting my own business as I am solely Gourmet and Medicinal now, as a side hustle that hopefully will become my full time gig. Nothing on Earth brings me more satisfaction than cultivating and observing mushrooms- even more so than consuming them- and I never would have found this intense love of mine without making those horrendous errors.
So chin up newbies! We are here to help! It's ok to not know jack about something your culture ignores- just accept and learn from your mistakes. And as always: read, read, read, read

blindingleaf said: I can say that one long term effect that cultivation has had on me personally is that in learning how to identify good growth, healthy mushrooms, and ideal conditions, I slowly turned that kind of observational focus on my self and realized a lot of things that were making me unhealthy (food, environment, mental thought patterns etc). I'd say that I'm a healthier person because of growing and that I'm much more aware of how conditions and environments have effects on large and small levels, physically and mentally.
I think in a way that idea is very cliche, but I don't necessarily think it's one that is really embraced to the extent it could be in people's lives. But...what do I kno...I smoke weed all day and play with mycelium, so my worldview might not be the most common
Are you me from another timeline?

I confess those last three posts are pure true confession gold!
As for LizardWizard's post - I think mushrooms helped me realize that long long ago...

Yeah. These guys are cool. They are the reason why there are purple mystics and pan cyans in my closet on grain and KSSS and PESA on agar.
I'm happy to report everything I have on grain is doing nicely no contams still. The pan cyans definitely look ready to colonize some substrate in a few days!
Was it you Tryptkaloids that gave me the mysterious sketchy three year old pan print to do as I may with. If so thanks! That print was sparse but golden. It may have even been a wild print. Hope I actually grow out pans and not some other mysterious fungi.
Also I confess I feel less anxious about my grows not that I am slowly getting over the learning curve.

I confess my agar came out of my pressure cooker and it's just liquid now. It was solid going in. Has anyone ever had that happen before?
