Yeah I experimented with an empty jar. I already drilled 5/16 which is the largest bit I have and a happy medium between the sizes. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I packed my poly too tight. I think when I'm done I'll leave the lids a half turn loose for a little extra GE just in case. Every time you do one thing you get all worried about the next. Almost there to having stuff on my own grain that I made myself! Tonights the night for reishie and PM. The pan cyans I put on the extra kit I have look great and will be fruited in a 27 quart mono. Two more weeks before I colonize and 3 more weeks or so to fruiting! I think the reishi will only take a couple of weeks to colonize the jars. Someone said I had to be careful not to let the spawn turn into wood.

Ya if you have reishi on grain you better be prepared to spawn/g2g it as soon as it is done colonizing cause it turns into a solid block of rubbery myc really fast. Like you have 1 day to do what you need to do once it hits 100

Reishi is probably my favorite smelling mycelium and fruits. Ya spicy is an interesting way to describe it, it definitely tickles the nose in a strange way. It has an interesting sharpness that really separates it from other myc. Hard to describe but I like spicy because it describes the way it makes my olfactory senses feel more so than the way it actually smells. Like it doesn't smell like cayenne but it makes my nasal passage feel the same as smelling something spicy.
Wild reishi are really pungent and I can always smell when they're growing in the area. Then you see me sniffin em out like a truffle hound

My reishi are from some wild sessille that I found in front of my favorite pizza place. I have only really seen reishi a few times and didn't know what it was when I did see it. I found this really agressive plot of polpores and I was delighted to find out what it was and started the project. I cloned the little puff ball in the top pic. I want antlers. Whats the best way to achieve low C02 during fruting. I was just thinking a mono with no holes.

I would personally do sealed grow bags. You just inoculate then let them sit for a few months and then harvest. Monotub will work but it takes up a lot of space and the tub will be occupied for a few months so you have 1 less tub in your normal rotation.

Bottle grows work really well for reishi too. If you are gonna do a mono, I'd use a mini mono.

This is the first reishi grow I ever did. It was a wild clone and grow from a resinaceum specimen my chick found. It's in a mono

Bags are much easier to do than that mono and the bags take up about the same space with a much fatter harvest in the end.
Thanks boog! I got more coming up but they are months inbetween ya know haha. I still have all the dried fruits from my last grow because I keep putting off the extraction

Wow! Nice bags! I have a few extra tubs available since I'm not going crazy till I move. What do you use for substrate for them. I have some cococa shell mulch I was going to use because It's got lignin and cellulose and well a lot of other good nutrients.

If you supplement the bags a little with brf or bran, you can use like 1/2 a qt of spawn per 5lb bag. The bags I posted were 3.5lb no supplements and only a 1/2qt of spawn in each bag. So 9 qts made 18 bags and I had a fat yield. Next time I'll try to work out the actual b.e. when I do it just for shits and gigs

@TBC, I used hardwood fuel pellets from walmart for those bags. They were a little over field capacity which is why there is so many mutants and weirdos in there Now I have a couple hundred pounds of hardwood maple sawdust that my buddy gave me for free. He works at a wood working shop and they just had trash cans full of it so I he said I could have it all
