oh i dunno if there is a maximum. i pretty much exclusively use pda but I also dont keep cultures alive super long. if you're cultures are appearing weak, thats a good time to change it up.

I read mycelium tends to stall when you feed it new material. I meant changing agar as in going from PDA to Tapioca and molasses and then the MYA recipe from stamets book all in the same set of transfers. I'm sure it will do the same thing it did last time. It will use up the tiny cube I transferred it on and then go t town on the MYA. I admit the tapioca molasses experiment was a partial fail. I'll stick with MYPA for the rest of the transfers. I want to save my grain water from this grow to put in next grow. I'm thinking ice cubes maybe? I also want to leech the dried manure and use a little bit of that in the agar in my last set of transfers for my next grow in hopes that it will help things take off faster. That should work right?

What's MYPA?

I generally use LME nowadays, but have used beer for a long time in the beginning. I used it at 50% strength, as was recommended by someone here, and I found out recently, after switching to grainwater and LME, that Belgian beer, even the cheapest kinds, are waaay to rich to use at 50% strength. Growth is REALLY slow. I'm guessing 25% would do better, but since I switched to GW and then to LME, I've never looked back. I've done PDA in the meantime as well, as a comparison, but I didn't like it. Granted, the flakes included salt n pepper, some nutmeg, and some eggwhite I think. But I don't like the visibility of it either, so regular flakes wouldn't do me much good either. If I would have to switch up recipes, I think I would try something with karo in it, as I allready have that on hand, and then maybe think about a water soluble starch that doesn't cloud it up too much..

Hey Munch, I know you're supposed to feed them another agar every now and then, but how many transfers do you reckon would be a good maximum to keep sticking with 1 recipe?

I almost always use MEA.
If a culture has been on one agar recipe for many months AND it looks like it is slowing down, I'll consider transferring to a new type of agar.

Or if I'm taking a culture out of long term storage in a slant, I might switch to a new agar...

Bout to go eat some cajun food with my girl, my bestfriend and his girlfriend that found out she's pregnant this week. They're the only two people besides my girlfriend that know I grow, he kinda sorta grows too  and even then we only chill on the weekends.
My girl doesnt smoke weed but they both do so we always chief it up cuz he flips lb's, which will be ending soon since they're having a kid haha

Barley Malt Sugar, Nutritional Yeast, Peptone = MYPA I have been using malt syrup to replace the malt sugar. I hope it's the same. Maybe I should get me some of that light malt extract.

As for a clear starch I made an interesting discovery. I hypothesized that tapioca starch would make more translucent agar. It totally worked.

Also I just discovered reishi mycelium really is like fucking wood and I better be careful to get it out of the grain jar once it's colonized before it solidifies. I was trying to see if maybe I could get just a mycelium sample but I would have probably had to dig in and disturb the patch pretty hardcore to reach anything soft. It's the awesomest thing I've ever seen. I have my own personal reishi forest to sample from. It just keeps expanding.. I have to take another photo tomorrow.

I decided to sample an immature little reishi puffball to clone. I'm still brainstorming how to rip it open without contaminating the center flesh. It's hard as a rock. Any suggestions?

Could you notch the edge with a blade and rip it open by hand? Never held one in my hand so

That's a great idea. I'll cut around it and hopefully I'll be strong enough to snap it open.

P.S. Reishi mushrooms smell gross. I'm not sure how I'm going to make tea out of these things when I grow them.

I confess I cut my finger while trying to get out ganoderma tissue. I have to find my medical tweezers for next time. Almost lost a finger. Maybe it's the species of reishi it is that makes for the smell. Ganoderma sessile. I was told this species is the easiest to cultivate so I'm glad I found it. I finally have something growing so it can look less sketchy that I have all this shit. I really hope they grow.

I want some of that antler reishi. That stuff looks awesome!

Those will grow antlers too I'm fairly sure just have to keep them in high co2 environments.

Next time you want to clone a Reishi, soak a few toothpicks in water then push them 1/3-1/2 way into the soft edge. Come pback 3-4 days later then pull them out and place on agar.

Woah. I'm going to go look up how to do that. Must have reishi antlers.

I'll have to try that toohpick thing. Sounds a lot safer.

Why does the idea of purchasing a metric ton of agar amuse me? Who's in? :ducklol:

Alibaba always seemed kind of sketchy to me. Not really sure how tradeing in that quantity works.

Best price so far. Still looking. If you buy 5 lbs. That's 20 bucks a lb. Holy shitake!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Agar-Agar-Powder-5-lbs-Red-Algae-sea-weed-with-free-shipping-/253050052011?hash=item3aeaf55dab:g:pL0AAOSw2kZZbNLI

26 bucks a lb. here if you buy 5lbs. http://www.bulkfoods.com/cooking-ingredients/3488-agar-powder.html

Also cheapest I've seen for single purchase packets of telephone agar. https://iglobalfood.com/m17/index.php/telephone-agar-agar-powder.html
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-pack-Agar-Agar-Powder-Telephone-Brand-ships-from-USA-/122016447130?hash=item1c68bf3a9a:g:1QIAAOSwNuxXYWD2

Also look at the price I just found for premixed agar. It's cheaper than buying the telephone agar packets at the store for me.

https://www.shroomsupply.com/agar-culture-media/bottled-media-mixes-additives/malt-extract-agar

Anyone getting better prices somewhere else?

I find that in a reishi mushroom there is certain ideal places to collect tissue mostly the very middle of the stipe or whatever there is where a stope would be is the best
