I confess I'm going to ask a dumb question. I'm making an agar recipe and want to know if I can substitute barley malt syrup for barley malt sugar. I'm assuming the latter is the same thing just in a syrupy good. All my transfers seem to be stalling a bit and I really want to get that third transfer going while things are still healthy.
It's going to be rainy this weekend so I'm going to bury all my old plate material. This should be interesting.

I just read the more nutritious my agar is the slower it is to colonize. Ahhh! I don't know what to think anymore.

Use a lot less nutes. I use 1 grain water ice cube for 5 reg ice cubes. Works wonders.

more nutes makes our cultures lazy, if they have everything they need then they don't need to work to survive. I would avoid sugars and just give it a single source of nutrition. I only put simple sugars in to aid germination. for transfers I just use potato starch/various grain flowers/grain water/dog food things like that, I haven't used sugars in mycology for atleast a year

If you are cooking your own grains save the grain water. Keep it in the fridge. Then when you make up your agar solution:
200 ml grain water 300 ml distilled water
I like to add an additional 1 gram of light malt extract to this. It works really well!

I'm just going by what's been working. And this formula has worked like a charm for me. Fast growth on plates. Strong growth.

Same. At first I had a problem with making it too nutritious and growth was always slow and fuzzy across all cultures

Same. I've been using 25ml grain water to 225ml of h2o if I want fast growth.

I've only been able to get semi-rhyzo on as low as 1% nutes, but still not what I would like to see

Ok maybe I'll try dropping that formula back next time and see what happens.
