Congrats Camera93! Glad you feel at home!
Hey I am thinking it’s time to kick off some theme confessions and maybe award some prizes!
I’m not going to post this on the opening page of the thread so it may only be semi active members who get on board.
Camera your anniversary has inspired my theme:
“SOME THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN (or advise I should have followed) WHEN I FIRST STARTED CULTIVATING”.
Use that quote to start your confession then follow with an explanation of what experiences led to those regrets.
The contest will run until August 31st then I’ll ask for votes or nominations for the best confession. Prizes might include scalpel blades, filter disks, and or sporez.
Let er rip mycofam!

Awesome Psilo!
I'll kick it off
"SOME THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN (or advise I should have followed) WHEN I FIRST STARTED CULTIVATING”.
No matter how cool Jakeoncid makes it look for pans/exotics, you really don't need a GH for cubes.

I wanted the changing lights and fog so bad....I only kept it up for a short while. It was cool to change colors from my phone, but I grew better mushrooms in passive totes lol I only wanted the GH cause I thought it looked so cool (and still do!) but the novelty wore off and I could have spent the money on more useful things

“SOME THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN (or advise I should have followed) WHEN I FIRST STARTED CULTIVATING”
I confess that when I started cultivating I would procrastinate cleaning up after myself and my cult supplies.
I wish I had known how much mental space you free up when you clean your space

“SOME THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN (or advise I should have followed) WHEN I FIRST STARTED CULTIVATING”
My first cultivation was in the late 70s… but for my latest “first time” 30+ years later, I confess that I wish I knew that you should flame your scalpel outside of your SAB … I would flame mine inside and sometimes even with a culinary torch so uh yeah that still air was not very still in my SAB and probably contributed to a lot of green plates!

The contest is coming to an end soon... We need more confessions!
Contest Theme:
“SOME THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN (or advise I should have followed) WHEN I FIRST STARTED CULTIVATING”
When I started cultivating (again) I still had the idea (from reading this book) that spores lasted forEVER and that it didn't matter how long they sat around waiting for me to get around to using them. So I kept collecting and collecting spore prints in a frenzy to some day try to grow all the flavors including the new varieties that seemed to be popping up every week!

BuhhtT ... I've since learned that as prints get older germination rates keep dropping and dropping and probably many of the spore prints I've collected over the years are probably too old to germinate. For example I fear I have let me Golden Halo prints sit too long. That was a beautiful strain and I got good reports from people also (I never ate any myself)

“SOME THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN (or advise I should have followed) WHEN I FIRST STARTED CULTIVATING”
Well I'm still brand new to cultivating but I'll confess anyway.
When I first became interested I spent way too much money on a grow kit... I spent a whole day comparing different kits, finally settled on one, bought it, and then 30 MINUTES LATER found the shroomery and realized I had wasted $100

I confess I wish I realized that dialing in your environment actually meant fiddling with your tubs until you get some results. Change it little by little until you find that sweet spot. I suffocated at least two tubs, then over corrected and dried up a couple tubs. I also confess I tried uncle bens even though I knew it was shitty. I ignored the advice of this site and tried it anyway. I wasted about $30 on rice bags.

I wish I'd known that taking almost a year off after a few successful runs would have me come back with a vigor.

My confession is starting a new grow for the first time in seven years because my shrooms finally ran out and I just want to trip. And buying a LC to get started again because I did not want to deal with creating a monoculture from a MSS.

By the way… there was a person who stepped up and asked for their participation prize pack. They should be getting it any day now!
My confessions: 1) I honestly feel like I was a better cultivator 2-3 years ago.
2) I feel guilty and feel a bit of vicarious pain when I neglect some aspect of my procedures or setting and maintaining environmental parameters and my mushrooms take the hit because of me! (So sorry I let you down guys! )

Well it’s a number of things, but I think it boils down to being too busy to put enough attention and planning into doing it right, and being good enough to get by without completely failing.
Before I was trying much harder to be focussed, to learn (maybe even master) cultivation techniques. Now with being so busy I’m Just being “good enough”.
The other issue is with limited time I really should just focus on a few select cultures, listen to them, observe them closely, and understand what they need.
Instead, I’ve got probably 25-30 cultures on plates at various points in the transfer process… 8 or 10 that are a week old, 20 or so that are 2-4 weeks old, and then a big assortment of things that are 3-6 months old! 🤪😳
Those older plates should be tossed out, but I’m not staying organized enough to remember which of the older master plates have a good transfer plate that is less than a month old.
On the culture front I need to make a bunch of distilled water slants and move backward from fresh clean plates and make long term storage of them, then look at the older plates and if I don’t have a slant prepared for them, make a transfer and if it’s clean after a week, then into the slant it goes… until I only have a half dozen fresh plates that I’m focussed on and the others are “archived” until I have more time to bring them out of storage.
It all boils down to making mush cult more of a priority and ditching the “good enough” attitude. 😊

I have not Thank you for that idea. Is there a special dehydration procedure for that?
I’ve purchased mushroom cultures from Europe and I got these vacuum sealed dry colonized millet packets. Is that the kind of thing you are suggesting?
