Yup, first try at growing 1974, from mail order from Oregon. It came with an instruction booklet and on the cover was an illustration Of spores coming from outer space!
Oh and the instructions called for making a glove box out of cardboard! With an alchohol lamp inside. And plenty of Lysol spray.

Lol the lamp inside a cardboard box full of Lysol. Sounds like it must be instructions from a kit out of those old high times.
Maybe it was a government plot to make all the hippies that would buy it self destruct.

Didn't the McKennas release a book under some pseudonyms? Is that the book you're talking about?

Man did I try hard to find that. Found this gem in the rabbit hole though. I still feel old thinking about my fish tank with a drip shield and my fugly ass cakes 20 years ago.

Oh man wish I still had that booklet. I believe it was from Homestead something. Just spores. And the first pathetic flush wasn't anything like what was expected. I mean, wrong shroom! But the next was ok, but very acid like.
Yup Homestead Book Store still going strong.

I confess I have grown about 30-40 tubs of cubes just fine and feel confident with them. Now i'm starting oysters here soon, but I have this weird anxiety of using bags or any other substrate besides coir because I've never used them before and have a fear of wasting things

Top fruiting cased grains in jars I think. It’s written from the perspective of the fungus at least to begin with.

It was illegal then in the US anyway. Much of the basic techniques were the same. Two things were pretty different. One, they had you weigh / measure grains then put it in the jar then measure and pour in water, then PC the water and grains together. No pre soak or prep. My memory is that the bottoms of the jars were a bit over hydrated and the top grains a bit under hydrated but after shaking after the PC cycle it was pretty evened out. The other thing is they pretty much had you fruiting out of quart jars. After the colonized you cased them and misted and then got your harvest right off the cased grains. No bulk substrates.

I confess that I secretly hope some type of experiment using fungi to decompose plastic goes south and it becomes an super efficient species that starts to decompose random plastic shit like lawn mower wheels, pop bottles, cell phone cases, and shit like that. I think it'd be a fun turn of events

Reminds me of when nano tech first started becoming possible and people were freaking out about the “grey goo theory” or whatever it’s called where the bots go rogue and begin disassembling the whole world at a molecular level to reproduce themselves.
