I confess I’ve been very worried about Doc

Anybody heard from him? I suspect his father must have passed by now.
Hard stuff to deal with...

I think he said one of his kids was dealing with something also. Super rough shit man I can’t even imagine. Hopefully he’s good.

It would make total sense to me if he’s decided to go wander off into the forest for a few weeks to process things.

Yeah, doc has been having a shit year. I think you're right, the last post I remember reading about his dad it didn't seem good.

And thanks psilo, I appreciate the tips. I think part of the reason I was so discouraged was the amount of work I put in to try to get rid of the contam. I spent a full 8 hours dealing with bleach fumes in my basement and washing out 40 ziplocs seemed like a waste just to have a bunch of bacterial colonies instead of mushrooms.

Amazon sellers are also price gouging... go to Ace Hardware. $13-15 for 12 quart jars.

They won’t ship, but you can buy online and select curbside pickup.

Limit one, but you can buy one pack of 12pk regular mouth and one 12pk wide mouth. And you can do it again the following day. Use their store finder feature to locate stores that actually have them in stock. And you could always go inside and pick up another 12pk after you’ve picked up your online order...

I also found Petco offers a 10% discount on online curbside pickup (eco earth coir bricks)... another item that has gone up dramatically in price. I picked up 8 3-brick packs for $7.39 after discount. Not all Petco’s offer curbside pickup, but they have many locations (depending of course on your location).

I have 25 qts of APE like that right now. Spawned a mono 2 days ago but it looks aight.

Same here!

It was all I had left after tossing so many contam jars after using bad LC... but the jar had such a strong mushroom smell, I thought “what the hell”... and look!

My first ever APE! Sure, very spotty pin set (for a jar I almost threw out), but I’m so excited! Never experienced APEs and I’m dying to try them.

I’ll spawn bacterial jars as long as they colonize the jar still. I actually just spawned a super yeasty one too that’s doing great.

The myc really didn’t seem to mind and still colonized everything. Spawned it a few days after this pic

Then here’s the tub at seven days

Weird stuff. I should specify when I do spawn bacterial jars it’s always in a shoebox by themselves. This yeasty one was mostly just cuz I have nothing going on right now.

I did have this happen once before around New Years and I set the jar aside and forgot about it. When I found it a few weeks later it had been totally colonized too and gave me one good flush before molding.

I confess, I want to get a list of species native to my area, and all my cultures supplies and euipment and travel the pnw planting spawn.

Something about doing culture work on the road, building tiny cellars around national forests to keep spawn warm while colonizing, planting grains to use as spawn. Just seems fun

I confess that I love my shroomery family, the last couple months have been very difficult, particularly the past two weeks.

I want to thank all of you that sent prayers and kind words during one of the most difficult times of my life.

As many of you know, my father was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer several months ago.

On September 16th, Hurricane Sally made landfall causing the Perdido river to rapidly rise (no one expected a cat. 2 Hurricane), at 0700am my brother called me saying that he and my parents needed to evacuate (the eye of the storm was just coming on shore) that the river was nearing the house and already flooding the exit road.

Now, at this point my dad is completely bedridden my mom is blind. I had to load up my jonboat in Hurricane force winds and then cut my way through fallen trees to reach to their house. By the time I got to them, the water was already at the door.  I don't know if any of y'all have ever had to pick up someone that is paralyzed or bedridden,  but it is not an easy task in the best of conditions, imagine trying to put them in a boat. It took every bit of the training and experience that I gained while on active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard and my experience as an arborist to pull this river rescue off safely. 3 hours after I received the call, my parents and older brother were safe at my house.

you may ask "why not call 911", emergency services do not respond during the peak of a hurricane and for several hours after,  you are on your own!!!

Well,  my dad did really good for the first 5 days afyer the storm and then took a sudden turn for the worst.  At the end, after suffering through agonizing pain for 2 days he finally succumbed to his disease on September 26. My wife and I had just given him a bath, he passed away 20 minutes later.

Having him in my home until his passing was one of the most therapeutic experiences I've ever had with death. Having the last 10 days to provide him with 24hr care helped me to deal with his passing a lot easier,  because I got to see just how much he was suffering in the end, not to mention that I took that time to say all the things I felt needed saying. This man wasn't my biological father, but he raised me from age 6 as his own son and I had to be sure that he knew just how important he is to me, that in my eyes he is my father. After all, I'm the man I am today because of the values he instilled in me.

With all that said, it's important for me to share with you, my shroomery family, just how helpful you were to me during this difficult period and that your words of support and prayers made a difference.  There were many days that I felt alone until I received a message from one of y'all with words of encouragement,  sympathy, empathy, prayers and much more. I love you all and appreciate each one of you.  Thank you very much 😊

My Condolences Doc
You have certainly been in my thoughts and I’ve been sending good vibes your way.
I didn’t think to send you messages because I just assumed you were offline.
I hope this next chapter, while difficult, is a lighter and brighter one for you!

Today, is the first time I have been online in a few weeks with the exception of once or twice to drop to check my messages, but I only did that because I was expecting specimens in the mail.

2020 has been a shit year for sure, it started on 30 January with my mom breaking her left arm and leg, only to avalanche into much bigger issues.  My daughter is still battling her cancer. we won't know anything for another month or so. Doctors haven't even started on the cancer in her throat, but have been focusing solely on the abdominal cancer. Hopefully,  what is in her throat is secondary to the abdominal tumor and not a separate issue all together.
Everything that has happened makes me feel like I'm trapped in a vicious cycle of Murphys law or something. I mean what I said about the support I've received from you guys, it truly made a difference and meant the world to me.

You sounds like a true hero in my book, Doc.

I don't know you but you've been a big help in a lot of ways and wanted to say thank you as well as i'm happy you're okay. Also the fact that you had a therapeutic experience with the death of your father is beautiful. No one is ever ready to have to deal with that. It's of course an occasion of grief but i'm glad you were able to spend the last moments with him. It's something a lot of people don't get to do.

Also it's hard to hear that you are dealing with so much at once. If I could reach through this screen i'd give you a fat ass hug my guy. I've never had to deal with such things and I can't even imagine the mental stress of it all. I hope your daughter pulls a full turnaround and I hope you find some relief with all this at some point soon. Many people would probably just give up after so much wrong going on.

You're a trooper.

Keep on keeping on bud, stay mushy, and may the world give you a damn break :mushroom2:
