Doctor Mario said: I confess that that tonight I was stoked to advance from agar to grain. I had a nice puck that I went to put in a grain jar and it fell off the scalpel and landed face down on a wet towel. 🤦♂️ So disappointing... I put in the jar anyway but I guarantee there is no way that its not gonna contam. Oh well. I should have another nice puck ready in about a week and a half.
I use a single piece about the same size as if i were transferring to another plate.
Interesting. I would've never thought of using a smaller piece. I guess just cause I imagine it would take so long. I might try it cause I only have a couple good plates of some Stro and I'd like to make 5-10 good master jars with them for g2g
The trick is not waiting too long to start shaking.

I almost burned my hands off last month
Iso...torch..gloves...
Was a bad chain reaction, I didn't wipe down my flowhood table very good, there was a pile of iso sitting there I didn't see. I dropped my flaming scalpel, I dunno, freak accident. It had a flame on it from being freshly dipped in iso before being torched.. ... this fell directly into the puddle of iso on the table top... puddle of iso ignited which was beside my gloves, which were on my hands and also freshly covered in iso
I looked like ms.doubtfire running around my lab. It's a miracle the shitty nitrile gloves I use prevented me from getting any serious burns. Trying to rip them off while they engulfed in flames was fucking scary. I think the gloves combined with me managing to pull them off before they burned seriously was a big help. Being thicker 6mm non-shit quality gloves also a good thing...
There was enough iso on them they were still flaming on the floor for a bit after I pulled them off. I thought my hands were gonna have serious burns...

Honestly it was just such a freak chain reaction of mistakes and fumbles but it could have ended much worse
Be careful ya'll

lol luckily with stuff like this explosion is usually a bigger danger. I’ve seen people pour a pool of iso in their palm and light it and it just kinda burns out when the alcohol is gone.

Yeah I've actually took notice over the last few weeks that you've been talking on a few threads bout shaking a little earlier than I normally would. I've been trying it out and I like it honestly. Before I was only shaking once at like 40%.
For a small a2g wedge like we're talking, when would you do your first shake roughly? Is 20% too early? I'm about to make up some grain tonight and give it a shot

20% colonization of the entire jar? No.
To give you an idea... if the piece of agar is the size of a dime... when the growth looks like the size of a quarter i'm shaking if i havent done so alread. My first shake is usually maybe 3 days after knocking up the jar.
Once myc grabs onto a nice lil cluster of grains around the agar... shake. Then like 3 days later... shake it again. Your jars should finish faster.

Sorry to hear about the pyrotechnics... It doesn’t happen to everyone but enough that it almost seems like a right of passage in this hobby. Another good one is when someone thinks spraying Lysol in their SAB is a good idea and then adds an ignition source before it’s cleared...
I’m convinced we have this Giff on the shroomery for these reasons:
So it’s probably obvious at this point but you can get many of those benefits with an iso wipe and perhaps most critically you can and should flame your scalpel outside of your SAB and after it’s red hot - move it into the SAB to do your work. 😊
My confession... I have been telling myself for years it would be best to select 2-3 good performing cultures and run those for a few months... but I just can’t seem to do it!
So many flavors!!!

yes! my method for preventing this is to never get my blade wet with alcohol. I'll rub the handle down, but the blade itself stays dry. then when I put the blade in the flame, I start with the very tip, slowly working it up the blade. Haven't had any problems since doing this. Before I probably lit my hands on fire once every other SAB session just being too liberal with the alcohol.

Actually the last time it happened I didn’t have any iso on the scalpel at all, I think some fumes off my gloves are what ignited. Now I give em a minute for the iso to evaporate a bit before I flame tools.

With the shaking thing a while back I started violently shaking the jars after dropping the wedges instead of lightly tapping them to bury the agar. I noticed when I do this I get the usual growth around the wedge but also a whole bunch of tiny other spots show up all over the jar.

I confess, I just overcooked a batch of grain by about 20 min.
Surprisingly few burst grain. I'm gonna dry em more than normal and give it a shot.

I confess I always wanted to get one of those old carousel style paint shakers to shake up jars. Its a daunting task when you're looking at a shelving unit full of jars.

Trypt, I did switch to bags and love them but masters are always in jars. I won't grow enough now it would be an issue but still want to know if it works I actually picture a lot of cracked and smashed jars with grain flown about across the room.

That’s gotta be a third party seller or something man that’s like 8 bucks a jar after tax and shipping.
Good thing covid didn’t start during canning season or cult would’ve suddenly become a crazy expensive hobby.
No PCs, jars, iso, gloves.

I confess I planned my spawning perfectly with my schedule for vacation so that they would be pinning/about done when I got back. Well then hurricane Sally's bitch ass came and I had to move it up a week.
Now I have phat pins and i'm leaving tomorrow for 5 days.
Gonna be coming home to some mature, overripe, sporesplosions.
