Thermometer fluid in Cactus Brew
    #23946092 - 12/21/16 01:06 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hello,
I am brewing cactus and wanted to check the temperature but the thermometer broke inside, I got most of the red liquid out.
I wanted to know if this is safe to consume, i read online that the liquid is only anhydrous ethanol and 1% food colouring??

Thank you

Toss it, you will end up consuming micro shards of glass.

as far as the fluid goes unless you have an old mercury one modern thermometers use an alcohol and dye solution, a low heat will evaporate the alcohol (usually ethyl alcohol) sometimes other minor solvents, all of which will evaporate out at low heat.

as someone from the medical field unless its a large piece of glass larger than about 3mm it should pass though the GI track without issue, micro glass is of little to no concern.

Heat will take care of the solvent and a fine strainer would remove anything of concern, whether or not you want to take the time to do that or just toss and start over is up to you.

Thank you, yeah I got all the glass out, there is for sure nothing large than 3mm. Most of the red fluid remained inside the thermometer and only a small dot when into the brew of which i got most out.

I think it will be fine and will trust my intuition.

Thank you heaps for your input
