the reason you can't find any info is because Salvia seldom produces viable seeds, all plants that you see on the market are clones.

Though not impossible from seed!

IF you could actually find some it'd be a better option than nothing.

Damn these fungus gnats, there's not a lot of them certainly no swarm... but persistent enough that my plants seem to suffer a bit. Do I really need to buy those particular nematodes? Can't find any neem (i live in europe)..

You have to kill the larvae. The only way to get rid of them is to kill the larvae. Plus the gnats them selves dont do any harm beside annoying the shat out of you and laying their larvae in the soil.

Kactus brand actually gave me a good solution  for fungus gnats larvae. 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide to 4 parts water. Water from the top and watch it foam. Repeat every other watering. Works great. Might kill microbial life but you can always build that up again.

BTI (mosquito dunks at your local hardware store) are good for killing off fungus gnat larva.  Crumble a dunk into a gallon of water and let it sit for a day and then use it to water your plants.  Water with this once every 7 days to break the life cycle of the gnat.  Also letting your soil dry out and then watering with a peroxide mixture will help knock back the larva, but it's just easier to water weekly with the BTI.  No larva, no gnats.  By the way the gnats don't cause any harm to your plants they eat fungus (duh lol).  It's the larva that munch on your roots and can let rot set in.

Thanks very much for that I'll keep it in mind..

found info that the larvae are actually supposed to be quite big-ish, and visible gnarly looking. I've only seen little insects scuttling around, but turns out those are just unrelated ones possibly benign..
I went to dig around a bit in the soil but have been unable to come up with one such larva.

I guess the gnats I've seen are just your normal bunch and not a plague after all. I suppose the stunted growth etc is from other reasons like insuffient lighting..

Maybe but look up some picture of fungus gnats so you know what they look like. Theyre pretty distinctive, once you see them youll defiantly know which your seeing. But also remember that fungus gnat larvae munch on the roots so they might not be in the outer parts of the pot. They might be squirming around in or real near the root ball.

But Im not completely sure about this either it just seems to make sense to me that this is where they would be.

Once you see a bunch of pics of fungus gnats from all different angles if those are the ones your seeing in you garden I would carefully pull the whole plant out of the pot as if you were going to transplant it, but do this with out watering it so the dirt isnt muddy, this way you can really get a good look and really get in there as much as possible and if you still dont see anything at that point maybe even rinse some dirt off the root ball to get in closer to the roots.

Maybe its over kill but I like to be very thorough :2cents:

Good Luck

Good Vibes coming your way.

Thanks will do, have to repot one of my Salvia's really soon anyway..

I have checked near roots, but of course was careful not to just dig away around there. Don't salvia's root laterally to keep from falling over or do they bore straight down kind of?
Nor my Acacia Maidenii nor a Salvia I checked seemed all that well rooted to me. Maybe I ought to add some bonemeal.

Fighting a mite infestation... My Salvia's look awful but I see some with new growth so maybe they will survive. Had one rooting in water that was infested too and finally put it in some soil but all of her leaves were badly damaged. I still have one without mites tucked away in the living room with some new growth too.
Once summer rolls around I am going to completely scrub the area they grow in and then try to regrow my whole collection.  :facepalm3:

Get you some superthrive! I have used it to nurse canabis plants back from bad damage. It is worth the approx $10/ small bottle. I have used it after mites tore shit up as well as after I let PH get out of wack and do damage. It basically contains amino acids and minerals that help growth and regeneration.

For stunted growth make sure your not over fertalizing and that your soil PH is in the proper range for salvia.

pH looks good. I've never watered with anything other than distilled or melted snow, which is pH neutral when I test it each winter.
Never heard of superthrive, I'll take a look at it and pick some up for a try. Also probably should pick up some rooting hormone too.
Any of you guys have some recommendations for that stuff? I've never tried it but I don't want to take chances and lose my collection.

Salvia does not need rooting hormone at all so don't get it for salv. Just put cuttings in a glass of water (never really cold - always a bit tepid as with watering any plant basically), officially you have to refresh the water every 2 or few days but I personally have had no issues with actually leaving a cutting in water for months as an experiment!
Eventually planted that heavily rooted cutting as a log.

As a follow up experiment I am now trying to just grow a branch of salvia in just water, maybe feed it at some point but I won't be leaving it in fertilizer water for long, that is likely a recipe for disaster.

By the way if the stunted growth tip was aimed at me, thanks but it's mostly my other plants that are having issues with limited growth like succulents. That salvia log isn't growing well and wilting, but it is also too far from built-in lighting and I don't really have extra lighting... maybe it has to go near the windowsill instead.

Another salvia that I have had for a very long time I grew into one main thick stalk but at some point or another lost the leaves (I think it grew very high, dropped / pruned lower hanging leaves and then broke in transport or under its own weight)... now it's reanimated a little while ago and the first new growth was malformed. I also believe that it might have had fungus gnats years ago which I treated with a layer of sand, then I suspected that maybe I introduced the gnats from that plant, then again those gnats are ubiquitous.
The thick stalk is now showing regular growth again.

If I get paranoid about the gnats I might treat more plants with a layer of the riversand I got (is microscopically jagged type of sand), diatomecous (sp?) earth is not something I come across.

I don't normally have any problems getting them to root but since the infestation they're not the healthiest plants anymore. I've had a couple of cutting in water for about 3 weeks that still haven't shown signs of growing roots, even though they were healthy when I took them. Stinkin' mites.

I just found aphids on this tiny baby. There were like 15 on one tiny leaf. I pinched that off, it was easier. I removed the rest with tweezers and sprayed her with stuff.

I'm sorry but I can get very aggressive when I see damn insects on my plants. And I still have spider mites in the room, but the babies are shielded from them...
