Made a Mistake Trusted Cultivators
    #23945648 - 12/21/16 10:08 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Okay, yep I screwed up once again. It's what a noob does time to time, I've gotten past it. Okay I started my grain jars out using a home made spore syringe, so strike one, I know. So I was like what the hell I used the Damion 50/50* Tek and mixed it in an 18 gallon tub, not thinking it was going to even work. So I figured if the sub colonized then I would cut the holes in the tub to all FAE. STRIKE 2! The sub colonized but after trying to drill the holes in the tub I see it will damage the sub. I won't make that mistake again. At the current moment I am basically treating the tub like a huge cake. I have two holes popped in the side filled with poly, and I have 9, 1 & 1/2 inch holes drilled in the lid with clear plastic over them to allow for light ( which it probably doesn't need). What do I need to do different if anything to get the best results. I figured there would be better pinning. Throw me bone here.

@Cagney: Can you give us a pic of your whole setup? I guess I'm have trouble understanding why you can't just treat this like a monotub grow.

I'm thinking the same thing. Lots of times the bottom holes are taped closed during colonization on mono's anyway, so all you'd have to do is put your mono holes in it and run with it.

Just an update, and no I don't have any specific lighting I use a 15 watt CFL just a few hours out of the day. Most of these pins started before I subjected the tub to fruiting conditions or had any light.

Ok, these fruits are definitely crying out for a 6500 Kelvin light.  With it they will be fatter and much happier.

Really? Never heard that the light would create bigger fruits.

Even if you don't want to get a new bulb, you should at least give them more light in general. During fruiting, 12 hours of light each day is recommended. Just like mammals, mushrooms have a circadian rhythm. Right now they look really skinny because they're seeking light, thinking that growing upward will take them closer to a light source. Give them more light and they'll spend more energy on filling themselves out.

3000 lumens? That's an absurd amount of light!

I once replaced the four vanity lights in my bathroom with lights that were 500 lumens apiece. Man was never meant to see so much.

Seriously though, I would think anything over 1000 lumens per bulb for our purposes would be straight up overkill.

True,  but they were cheap and can do multiple monotubs at the same time

A standard energy saving daylight light bulb works.  As cheap as u can get it.

For example this daylight bulb is perfect., just look at the K value ie 6500K

Actually I have read through RR's notes, maybe I missed a section because I didn't see where he put emphasis on lighting. I will definitely give it another look. My last batch of cakes I fruited I barely used any light and kept the SGFC in a closet and I still got a quarter pound of dry off them, only first flush. I was always under the impression that FAE, Moisture in the sub, and temperature were the main factors of growth. I would love to grow some monsters, like I said this is my first tub. I'll use the kelvin light you mentioned on the next round and check the results. Thanks

You turned that sad tub to a happy little guy!

Congrats man and good work.

I use this lamp. Take off the little shade parts so it's just the bulbs.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Design-Trends-67-5-in-Contemporary-Black-Adjustable-Floor-Lamp-19002-07/204348422

Then i put in a 6500k cfl in each of the sockets. Works like a charm. You can also bend it anyway to best suit your set up.

Talking about mushrooms and lights, there is an interesting experiment you can do.  If u turn the tub 90 degrees the same direction every day the mushrooms grow twisted like a thread.
