Rye grain bulk grow guide
    #23945119 - 12/21/16 02:30 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Alright so I've been looking forward to attempting my first gt bulk grow and I've been doing a lil reading around and there's really no tek that can tell you what to do from beginning to end, and I think everyone has their own special techniques, but theres always something new to learn from each tek and thread so I've decided to make a small guide to help me and whoever else who needs it along the way. So tell me how i do, and Any advice would be well needed too.

So I've decided to go with 2 pound rye-grain substrate bags ready to get noc'd up and a 10 pound bag of pasteurized manure sub. I've decided I don't want to deal with a casing layer just cuz I don't need one so anyways, I'll start out with inoculation and end with fruiting.

Inoculation and cultivation:

1. Make sure your hands are clean and be sure to wear clean clothes

2. Clean your work area thoroughly with a disinfectant, then Wipe the bag and your
work area down with rubbing alcohol.

3. Put on your gloves and wipe them with rubbing alcohol.

4. Wipe the substrate bag down with rubbing alcohol

5. Make sure you shake your spore syringe to disperse all the spores .

6. Wipe the injection point with alcohol.

7. flame sterilize your needle then wipe the needle with an alcohol wipe to keep it nice'n kool, poke the needle through the  injection port.

8. You will only need to use 2cc's of your 10cc syringe for each 2 pound bag.

9. Some people say Shake the bag gently to disperse the spores, and others say don't shake it to let the spores colonize faster so I guess its ultimately up to you to shake it or not.

10. Place your bag in an incubator or storage bag in a dark and clean place. I also heard indirect light helps mycelium grow faster. Mycelium should incubate anywhere from 70-86°F

11. You can mix up the bag after about 5-8 days or until around 30% to 40% is
colonized to speed up the process. Try not to disturb the bags too much or it can kill or slow the mycelium growth.

12. Allow the bag to fully colonize. usually takes around 10-14 days at warmer
temps, or 16-21 days at temps around 70°. Depending on the species of mushroom you plan on cultivating

14. Once fully colonized massage the bags gently until all the clumps of mycelium are broken up.

Spawning grain to bulk sub:

Once your grain spawn is all broken up into little pieces and is 100% colonized it is ready to spawn to the bulk substrate.

1. Put your pasteurized substrate in your monotub were it will be mixed up with the spawn.(this will also serve as your fruiting chamber)

2. Mix in the spawn with the substrate as evenly as possible. If the spawn is not evenly distributed within the substrate, colonization of the bulk substrate may be uneven, causing it to take longer and allowing more time for contaminants to grow.

3.put your monotub in a dark place so that it can colonize. Depending on how much spawn is used, colonization can take 5 days to 2 weeks. The more spawn used the faster the bulk substrate will colonize.

4. If your monotubs lid fits imperfectly then you should tape the holes drilled in it and wrap your tub in a trash bag for increased co2 levels and the imperfect lid will provide for GE. If the lid does fit perfect then you should still tape the bottom holes but stuff the top holes with polyfil pretty tight for GE and then wrap it in that trash bag, this will also help keep in moisture and block out contams and if done right you won't have to mist it once until after your first flush.

5. When your substrate is fully colonized, its ready to fruit. Some people prefer to wait for a few pins, but this can add more aborts to the first flush. yields are better when fruited at 100% most of the time.

Fruiting bulk substrate:

The main goal for your monotub is passive FAE, start by stuffing your polyfill properly.

1. For the bottom holes on your monotub, you'll want to stuff them very tightly with your polyfil to keep fresh air flowing in the top and out the bottom. So for the holes up top very loosely pack them with polyfil.

2. Then run a fan in your room on low for good FAE, make sure it is facing near but not directly at the monotub. You shouldnt feel any direct wind from the fan blowing on the monotub

3. If a line of evaporation is running down the side of your tub from the top holes then its a good sign of FAE. The rest of the walls should be covered in condensation, except for small rings around the bottom holes.

4. If there's no signs of evaporation running down the holes from the top of your tub or any condensation on any of the walls of your tub during the first flush, then try adjusting your polyfil and moving the fan, if its dry then mist the sides of the tub but don't mist the substrate (some people say mist the substrate but a lot say not to, so I'm not sure if it would have an effect on the yield or if it just slows down the process)

5. Light:
Indirect sunlight and florescent bulbs (5500k) both work. When using indirect sunlight, care must be taken to rotate the chamber so all sides get even amount of sunlight, or fruiting will only occur more heavily on the sunlit side, which results in reducing your yield. When using artificial light, most commonly to simulate day and night is to use a simple outlet timer on a 12 hours on and 12 hours off schedule. Some prefer to leave their lights on for 24 hours a day and find that this produces better results. Some people say darkness is needed for better fruiting, but at least 1 or 2 hours of light is needed per day.

6. The sides of your monotub need some sort of method to block the light to prevent side pinning and underpinning, most people use plastic bags and line them up along with the substrate, or if you don't want to try to get the bag all perfect and wrinkle free you can sand the tub before you add all your bulk sub into it and paint it black to keep the light out.

7. Humidity:
The humidity of your monotub must remain high to encourage pinning and to all the growing mycelium to retain as much water as it can hold,The relative humidity(RH) of the air around fruiting mycelium should be at least 90% after all mushrooms are made up of 90% water kinda makes sense. The mycelium can create and maintain its own humidity, especially once it has fully colonized and fruit bodies are starting to grow.

8. FAE
Lower levels of CO2 are a signal for the mycelium to create fruit bodies. So The more fresh air you can get into your fruiting chamber the better, as long as you can keep the proper level of humidity. some contaminants also thrive in stale air with high CO2 levels so keep it movin. Some simply open up the lid and fan with a magazine or whatever you'd like to use, but in a dirty grow room, this would increase risk of contamination so keep it fresh all you dirty bums. (jk)

9.Misting
After you fan out your tub for fae you should mist the walls to replenish humidity and make sure you don't mist your bulk sub.

10. Temperature:
When Fruiting temperatures should be between 70-79°F (22-27°C), this is slightly lower than the 75-85°F (24-30°C)  during incubation. The mycelium of the mushroom also gives off less heat while fruiting than it does during colonization.

If all my research is correct then before you know it you should have some magic mushies popping up before you know it. If I left anything out please let me know and like I said bfore any additional advice is well needed thanks for lookin

I always find it crazy how new people can’t even formulate a basic relevant response to current threads to at least appear as if they have anytning of substance too offer.

Thanks

They necro'd a 5 year old thread as well.
Also, the info is terrible. Op was flame sterilising, then wiping with iso. Absolutely awful idea.
