IDM is hipster shit
IDM isnt even really a genre though, its just an umbrella term used to group shit. Just like the term EDM, its just a shallow way to describe something
Squarepusher has some really noisy shit, but I mean, I think noisy shit can still sound really cool. Its noisy in the same sense that Black metal is noisy. Like I have tons of friends who hate metal and just call it noise, but the aggressive nature and abrasiveness appeals to me. I totally understand how its not for everyone though.
Most of SPs stuff isnt even that noisy, its just forward thinking breakbeat and drum n bass, in the same sense that Tipper is glitch hop but his stuff is considerably more complex and layered than what most other glitch hop producers are putting out. I just love really fast shit, which is what got me into Square pusher

Yeah but hes allowed to be pretentious you know? He's a G
I dont think squarepusher is pretentious, but i think a lot of his fans are (not all, but without a doubt some for sure)

Yeah IDM is definitely somewhat broad but it still has a very pretentious vibe. Even just the name implies that other electronic music is "stupid". Even if I like some "IDM" I'll never actually use that term
And Id totally agree with his music being layered like crazy. Just too much for me. Sauarepusher has always seemed like ketamine music to me for some reason

The only song I really know by Squarepusher is this one, and it's pretty sick.
I'd agree that the genre name of IDM is a pretentious one. Is what it is I guess.

that's one of the best tracks on Hard Normal Daddy
and along with this one...
plus Ultravisitor, and also Ufabulum's first half, and then end, is great. it's not a perfect album though, like the other two. Music Is Rotted One Note is the best album in terms of ingenuity.

Okay yea I'd definitely agree with that. Hipsters in general are aggravating as fuck. Same with groupies. I think people just like to use music to define their identity as opposed to just being in it for the love of the music itself. To each their own
But yea, I'm pretty sure the only reason IDM arose was because people who dont like Tiesto dont want to walk around saying theyre into EDM. Most "IDM" artists dont even use the term. I just prefer experimental

It was the name of a mailing list back when Aphex Twin first started getting popular. That's its only significance, as a "genre" it was denounced by the guy himself as being a rubbish term.

Yeah I totally agree. Experimental serves the same purpose but doesnt have this whole underlying meaning behind it
Like these days I hate saying I'm into EDM (because for the most part I'm really not), so I just say I'm into electronic music. Same thing but doesn't impliy that I like shitty generic beats by no talent ass clowns haha

Was a very impulsive decision, but I couldnt resist. Who knows when hell be back in the state. I'm so happy I went. That festival in general was awesome. They had a ton of art installations that involved light manipulation, and the atmosphere felt very dystopian. Really one of the most forward thinking fests I've been to in a long time. Security was also lax as fuck, something I wasnt expecting in texas
I'm glad I'm not the only one who impulsively went to see Aphex Twin. That was easily one of the most mind-blowing, if not THE best set I've ever seen.
^^^^^ SET STARTS AT 8:30. Everything before that is just the sound check. I can supply a dropbox link to a cleaned up version of the audio to anyone that wants it. Just

OliverJames said: Finally got the chance to see AT and man, let me tell you, that was one of the craziest nights of my life. That guy is a genius. His mixing was absolutely superb and his song selection included some of the strangest, darkest, most industrial tracks I've ever heard. I was tripping pretty hard and I felt thoroughly disturbed in the best way possible. No joke, about 1/3 of the way through the set the temperature dropped 15 degrees, it started pouring, and the wind kicked up like crazy. Maybe it was cause I was tripping, but I felt like things suddenly got incredibly chaotic, sand blowing everywhere, people rushing for cover while other people started dancing even harder. It was as if he was orchestrating this uncontrollable scene.
I'm with you there too. I was 3 hits of good L deep (after a long day of doing K ) and I was convinced he was controlling the weather with the way the music would swell as the wind and the rain did. That Guantanamo track by Jlin (the LEAVE ME ALONE LEAVE ME ALONE LEAVE ME ALONE LEAVE ME ALONE one) and the acid version of Polynomial C had me going insane. Actually, scratch that, that whole fucking set had me going insane. I was fairly up close and me and everyone around me turned into fucking animals for the entirety of that set, especially once it started raining.
Place turned into a fucking refugee crisis after his set ended though cuz everyone was fucked up, the local cops had blocked off the streets around it, and everyones phone was dead. Shit turned into a Lord of the Flies-esque situation. I was walking around fucking soaked to the skin wearing nothing but a thin tshirt and corduroys in 40-45 degree weather and some smug cunt walking by actually stopped and said "Hey man, you're looking pretty cold. I'd offer you my jacket but I'm enjoying wearing it entirely too much right now" and it managed to cut through even my post-aphex afterglow acidbrain and provoke an angry response, something I don't think has ever happened while on acid for me before.

He did. It was dope. (Eprom is also just dope in general, his shows are fucking insane), as were the Jlin tracks and the 2 Qebrus tracks.

Also, here's Qebrus' face when Aphex played one of his tracks on his first trip to the United States right after meeting Aphex maybe 30 minutes prior to the set starting (though Aphex didn't realize who he was cuz his English wasn't the best) https://www.facebook.com/tearxenon/videos/vb.1529490858/3425489445877/?type=2&theater
OliverJames did you happen to go to the Defunkt Hyperbole afterparty? If not, you missed some absolutely fucking incredible shit on a beautifully run Funktion One setup.

I saw him live once
Bit of a let down actually as he mostly played industrial hardcore and not the awesome tracks like Alberto Balsam (which is one of my favorites too)
Used to be a major fan, not really following anything he does atm

Honestly, just flying out there was insanely impulsive to begin with. I had a lot going on with work that week and couldnt afford staying up all night burning myself to a crisp. I actually know the guy who runs these events tho and I've been to other Soundsystem culture events in the past. They always do it right. Happy to hear it was awesome

Not my cup of tea at all but I thought I saw him once in a train station
It looked just like the dude from Windowlicker and he was all pimped out in a white suit with a fancy watch and a cane. I was trying to work up the courage to go ask if it was him but he disappeared after waiting for the late train for awhile.
It was in Portland Oregon a few years back and probably wasn't him but it looked like it.

You know the guys in charge of Defunkt or in charge of Soundsystem Cultures? If the latter I'm assuming you're a Chicago local? Cuz my friend is one of the co-owners of Soundsystem Cultures

I can understand that. He definitely played a decent amount of industrial HC at this set but it was mixed in with plenty of other interesting tracks. I said it earlier in the thread but I was definitely surprised at how little Aphex twin material he played. But I think thats just his style. Ya know, a lot of producers prefer to keep their productions separate from their live sets. Just gives them a chance to go for something completely different. Either way I would have liked to hear alberto balsam

I've met Phil of soundsystem cultures when he was living down in florida. I'm not entirely sure but I was at the third event listened on their facebook page, back when they didnt have more than maybe 200 likes? I assumed they were a pretty new provider of F1 sound back then. I really only got to talk to him briefly, but they've exploded since then
