Sub dry out?
    #23944838 - 12/20/16 10:41 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hi,

Can a bulk substrate such as coir/verm "dry out" even if the FC keeps a relatively high Humidity (i.e. 80%-90%)?

Also, what color should a hydrated 50/50 coir/verm sub be?

Thank you,

Shit, can the issue be quantified down to: would it be  better to be to have a drier sub or a sub more on the damp side (if I avoid puddling). My sub still has some gaps on the top that look more of a really dark gray).

Thanks!

That's how it'll look to the eye
Almost like a never ending chess board to me

Also to answer your question my first couple runs they were dry just because was learning field capacity and misting as needed and then as I learned true field capacity
There hasn't been as much misting or dry subs so long story short make it work then adjust

When it's dry or needs water your sub will shrink more rapidly and sometimes the myc will form a ''leathery'' surface in efforts to retain more moisture.

There are several methods you could use to help keep your sub on the hydrated side

  • Dunk the monocake
  • Add casing layer
  • Ensure that the water droplets on the surface are being absorbed, so mist more on the surface
  • Dial in your monotub by tightening your polyfill to decrease the rate of FAE and thus decreasing evaporation rate
  • Check your temps as well, I incubate mine at 20C and rarely dries up
  • Make sure your tub is as clean as possible, contams will cause the myc to act faster than it's supposed to in an effort to spread it's genes quicker before the tub gets killed off by contaminants

Your mycelium should have the consistency of a freshly baked cake, moist but not too wet, fluffy but not too loose/crumbling

Sweet, I really appreciate the help!

So, I just went in today and wiped up a couple really small puddles on the monotub floor that were there for about 1.5 days (I'm using a small monotub with a 10x10 inch tray in it because only one of my quart jars survived).

I'm not using a casing layer and I have a fan in the room going about 18 hours a day. The premise for the question is because their is a crack in the middle of my sub. Here check out this pic:

Substrate specs:
MS on ryeberries to 50/50 coir-Verm
1:3 to 1:4 spawn ratio.
Humidity range: 78% to 92%
Temp range 70.2F to 74.8F
It's been in fruiting for about 3 days now.

Same sub for both pics with and without flash. Watcha guys think?

In the pic without the flash you can see the crack in the sub a little better. I sprayed the top of the sub about 5-7 times last night pretty much as soon as I saw the crack. I took these pictures today about 12:30 PM CST.

EDIT: I just felt up my sub a little and it feels like a very moist Red Velvet cake!

Turn the fan off, it's probably drying out your subs

Should I turn the fan off even if I'm misting every day now?

Yes because you're probably drying out the surface a lot faster than the cake can absorb. Dont let pools and puddles form on or under your mono either, that is a harbor for bacteria and other nasties

I see I see. Yeah I've been using a napkin every other day to dab any puddles I see on the bottom of the monotub. Water on the sides and roof of the tub are okay to leave, right?

Okay, I'll turn off the fan. However, I'm gunna wait until tonight to turn it off because I sprayed it this morning and it usually takes about 8-15 hours for it to fully absorb into the sub. I've been consistently checking the sub tho. It feels about the same consistency of a freshly baked red velvet cake!

Seriously appreciate the time my dude. I was hoping I'd get a little more feedback but it is the holiday season I 'spose.  :wowz:

I think the crack formed from lifting the tray on 1 side of it. The tray is pretty flimsy and bent & cracked the sub.

IMHO the tub looks fine to me it just needs some time to recover. You should be after getting little droplets of water on the surface. That is enough moisture. Moisture on the sides of the tub..etc, it's just condensation from the humid air, that is good sign as the sub is being kept humid.

Are there any odd/off putting smells coming out of it?

Just opened the tub up to smell, and I don't detect any unpleasant odors as of yet. The walls and ceiling droplets are from misting. They were actually all dried up this morning so I decided to re-mist. I don't think there's enough substrate in the tub to naturally keep it as humid as we'd like.

Here's a picture of the sub from this morning before I misted:

Do you see any knotting in the sub yet?
