What causes a casing to colonize?

The mycelium colonized it because it has a food source.
Peat/verm has no food and shouldn't colonize.
Coco based casings will colonize just ss easily as coco based spawn

Really? I've had mycelium colonize verm aggressively just like anything else.

i think there is aa difference in colonizing and growing over/on
ive got myc on agar thats growing up the sides of the plate. doesnt mean it is colonizing the plastics. thats what i ment.
because myc doesnt colonize rocks.(but ive seen it grow OVER a rock)

How could you tell if the mycelium is simply covering and going over the verm... versus actually breaking down its chemical compounds and using it?

My old PE culture took over verm and never pinned over the weeks. Almost all of them were like that.

I have only grown cubes prior to this . so this is my first casing and I was under the impression it should not colonize.

Vermiculite is a mineral and is most likely not being consumed by the mycelium. Looks like it's comprised of iron, manganese, silicon, oxygen...no carbon or nitrogen.
