Which spawn substrate has the highest contam rates in your experience?
    #23940271 - 12/19/16 12:53 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Simple question for the community of well-experienced growers. What spawning substrate have you experienced the highest amount of contamination with?

I have used a few different spawns in my time growing. PF-Tek, Wild Bird Seed mixtures, Rye Berries, and a (Verm, Coir, coffee ground, gypsum mixture).

My worst results have always been with rye berries, and I'm not sure why. It just seems to contam very easily. Second to rye berries, Wild bird seed which has sunflower seeds in it. It's almost ALWAYS the sunflower seeds which grow the mold. Not sure why that is either.
Which spawn has the highest rate of contamination in your experience?
You may choose many

just remove the sunflower seeds? they float anyway...

im noting trying to pick apart your thread but the question is too opened ended for a 1 answer response.

example.
ive had 8 jars in my life of wbs contam on me(besides bacteria)during colonizing out of uncountable batches. but ive had a good amount of bulk tubs go bad during fruiting. <- dirty spawn.

with pf i had lots of cakes go bad in the jar but the ones that did fruit never contamed on me(up to a point).

The question does not require a simple one answer response. That is why the poll allows multiple options. It's a relative question: I am not asking for hardcore science on which substrates contam easier. I am going for personal experiences.

Ofc after getting contamination with sunflower seeds, I began separating them out. I know alot of teks specifically state to do this now-a-days as well. I wonder what properties of sunflower seeds make them more prone to contams anyway.

This is such a small poll for the question

So many options man and they're going to all have people saying good and bad things about them. It's almost impossible to say one thing is better than the other. One specific brand could be better than the other, or the source it came from. Some Farmers spray with endospores as an all natural pesticide.

My advice is try every route and find what works best for you

But what I can tell you for sure is that making your own LC as a newcomer is a very bad idea.

I love to work with LC but you need a very good sterile technique to make a clean LC.

Yeah especially considering geographically everyone has different species of mold who prefer different substrates, temperatures, etc.
So many variables; grow room, fruiting technique, preparation, multispore or clone or mono, and so on.

Try them all.

100% chance of contamination with all given options, starch and or sugar present in all of them.
Unless you are taking steps to prevent bacteria but not mycelium, after cooking.

My answer is "none of the above", sorry there is little comparison.

Sunflower seed hulls are essentially a bulk substrate so certain molds are prone to sporulate on them. If mold got in the spawn jar though it's contaminated whether you see it or not. You'd most likely be seeing the mold later even without the hulls, possibly after spawning. So I don't see it necessarily a bad property since it's good to be able identify contaminated spawn as early as possible.
