open casket funerals... why?

I dont understand these. Not only is there added cost. but just... why. Why does anyone want to see the dead body of a loved one. Even with makeup I think thats just a bit fucking wierd. A photo does the same job but in a much better and less wierd kind of way.

When my dog died I wanted to sleep with her dead body for just one night, but my family didn't let me.

"Grieving process"
Personally, I find the whole idea of parading dead people around and burying them in extravagant metal containers really weird.

My dog laid in state for one night then the next day I dug a hole and dumped her in along with her bed.

To face death head on and accept it in a manner consistent with the reality of it. Not that it's completely like that either. Nothing wrong with looking at a dead body either though.

But they would eventually crawl back out of the ground if we didn't lock them in caskets.

That's real love. Just a few months back my dog was bit by a rattlesnake on a hike, I thought she was going to be fine after she survived the first 12 hours, and I eventually fell asleep with her. When I woke up she was not looking well and not very responsive, but she was able to lift her head and look at me one last time before she died. It felt like she fought death all night while I slept just to say goodbye when I woke up. Fuck that was hard to type.

At his funeral, Allin's bloated, unpreserved corpse was dressed in his black leather jacket and trademark jock strap. He had a bottle of Jim Beam beside him in his casket, per his wishes (openly stated in his self-penned acoustic country ballad, "When I Die"). As part of his brother's request, the mortician was instructed not to wash the corpse (which smelled strongly of feces) or apply any makeup.

Oh my god, poor thing. If that was me I'd be guilt-tripping over not having taken her to the vet.

Well I am a vet tech and was working at an animal rescue at the time. I still contacted other vets and kept getting news like "antivenom is very risky when used in dogs and sometimes kills them and rarely works." And since she was bit nearly 10 miles deep in the forest it took me several hours to carry her out, and if you can't administer an antivenom within an hour or so, it is to late.

That's not true, is it? Just because I've heard of cases where somebody has been administered antivenom almost 12 hours later and still survived deadly snake bites. Like somebody is several hours deep in the forest so it still takes 2 hours for the helicopter to arrive. Then they're transported for another 2 hours to the hospital only to discover that hospital doesn't carry antivenom, so they have to be transported to another hospital, which takes more hours.

That's with humans. The venom in dogs tends to run its course much faster. And I'm not saying it's "to late" for the dogs life, I mean it's to late for the antivenom to have any effect, and with it being so risky to use with dogs, it's far from worth it.

If you dress up a corpse in your basement, you're a psychopath. If you do it at a funeral home, you're normal.

I understand most funeral's, but one thing i saw on a show really just weirded me out.
Now, i know it's a tv show, but even most fictional shows have basis in reality, and honestly this show is praised for being a realistic protrayal of urban street life and life as a cop and various institutions that interact with police force.
I'm talking about the wire. There's an episode where they attend a dead officer's wake in a bar. I always pictured even that, simply being the open casket in a bar (usually the person's favorite bar, any place to hang out really) with friends and family grieving and remembering them.
Instead what i saw was the officer's corpse inn uniform with a beer bottle in hand, various memorials (pictures, jewelry etc.) Scattered around his corpse.
None of this bothered me still, what got to me was that the corpse was just laying on a pool table. Not on a curtain or blanket even.
Has anyone heard of this? The show is set in baltimore, and in a way i can picture this actually happening, but him laying on the pool table just seemed so bizarre to me.
Other then that, i can wrap my head around just about any culture's funeral process, but this one just seemed weird to me.
