Favorite live music?
    #23938337 - 12/18/16 03:00 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Post/ discuss your favorite live music and why it is your favorite.

I will start with a seriously underrated guitarist/ band:

Robin Trower - Full Concert - 03/15/75 - Winterland

Not the best audio quality but there is a decent video and it is from a 70's winterland show! Robin tears it up and the singer is as soulful as always :awesomenod:

For those who prefer quality audio over a video here is a live album of theirs:

Robin Trower - Live - Full Album

Robin is one of my favorites becouse he has such a genuine/ raw playing style that feels very fresh, the singer/ bass player is great as well RIP Dewar.

Many people agree Robin is one of the most underrated guitarists out there which I would have to agree with as well. He is like a more refined white Hendrix with his own unique touch.

Pink Floyd - Pulse [Live in Concert @ Earl's Court, London 1994] Full Show [Multicam HD]

This is probably my all time favorite concert, if I could time travel it would be first on my list most likely. I own the DVD which I highly recommend.

Watching it at a solid volume so you can feel the music is one of the greatest things ever especially if you are nice and baked or on psychs.

T SQUARE 35thAnniversary JapaneseSoulBrothers

This last song is easily one of the most intense/ inspiring pieces of music I have heard. It is full of amazing improvisation and this version has at least 9-10 minutes of bass solos from the 3 electric bassists! 3 Guitarists as well as 3 full sized drum sets/ drummers and an extra percussionist totaling 4 drummers! Then they have a 3-5 piece horn section featuring 2 amazing saxophonists, it is mind boggling really how many people they have on stage while still keeping the music super tight/ refined even with all the improv...

The song name is very fitting as they truly are soul brothers forming one giant entity to create some of the most beautiful music ever

Anyways those are 3 of m top picks at the moment, I am interested to see what other live stuff people here dig.

Also there are some local bands, one space funk called Space Neighbours and the other is Belly Full of Bob, Bob Marley cover band.

theres also a Led Zepplin cover band called Stairway Denied.

Reggae bands are awesome live, like Sol Seed. So awesome :datass:

Why they the best? cause the rock da house like pros!

This guy is a brilliant live performer. Seen him a couple times and he
always kills it, one-man-band style :yesnod:

Shakey Graves-late july. Fast forward to about 1:20 into the video for
the song.

His studio stuff is nothing like his live stuff. It's almost like his
record label purposefully bastardizes his music. Shame...

CRB is awesome! I just watched a rig rundown of Chris and Neel that was very fun watch, they both tell a lot of great stories:

Rig Rundown - Chris Robinson Brotherhood

Here is my next submission, this is a super epic live album I recently found. 2 full sized jazz fusion bands playing live together:

T Square & Casiopea Tokyo Jam 97 live

A few of the songs are on the cheesier side but damn do they throw down for the whole show. Some absolutely amazing guitar/ bass/ saxophone work

I saw him once at REgeneration pretty high on mushrooms, was an interesting show. It was back when I still appreciated more electronic music so I enjoyed it.

Pretty sure my mom knew him back in the day before he blew up and became famous. I think they were just in some of the same circles or something.

Classical has been slowly growing on me. I still never actually listen to it but I really love classical elements in other style of music especially prog rock and jazz. Many of my favorite musicians were classically trained before getting more into rock and or jazz. One day I want to study at least some classical music, and spanish guitar. Well composed music really is the best, it takes you on such amazing mental journeys.

I feel you but I tend to always have a few favorites in rotation. I rarely listened to any studio stuff for quite awhile.

Sadly we only have like 2-3 decent venues excluding bars/ clubs around here so I only go out to the occasional epic show when I get the chance.

Yes but it has been awhile, I always preferred PULSE and The Delicate Sound of Thunder for their lightshows and audiences.

Pompeii is great too though as are Gilmours Gdansk and Remember That Night DVD's, Gdansk was Richard Wrights last concert I believe RIP

Gonna be weird to say but I think folk and jazz music sounds the best live. I feel like the spirit of the music is presented more accurately live in those genres and similar ones like blues and bluegrass.

I've been to way more rock concerts but rock is usually like bashing your head against the speakers as opposed to an intimate construction of music.

I agree in part but some rock can be very intimate and well composed, that is one of my favorite things of a lot of progrock.

Likewise not all jazz is intimate and soulful, some can be pretty stale/ over composed and lacks the "oomph" of other genres or even just better jazz

Personally I don't like single genre music as much as stuff that blends at least 2-3+ styles even subtly, I can dig some blues/bluegrass/rock/jazz but my favorite stuff blends the lines between genres. For example I hate most country music but a lot of my favorite guitarists blend country into their styles and make it sound great.

Here is a good example of one of my favorite prog rock composers:

Eloy - Age Of Insanity (Live recording studio)

Just listen to how well it all fits together, the drums/guitar/vocals/synth/bass are all carefully arranged to create some beautiful soundscapes.

I had a huge collection of Pink Floyd bootlegs for awhile, and I own at least 1 or 2 on vinyl. The Man and the Journey is one, the other is DSOTM live in london 74 which isn't a bootleg I believe as the sound quality is terrific. Speaking of some more live floyd definitely deserves a spot in this thread, here are a few more of my favorites:

Pink Floyd-Any Colour You Like (Live At The BBC 1974)

This is one of my favorite versions of Any Color, the PULSE version is also epic but much shorter. Both make the studio version seem very lackluster IMO.

And here is by far my favorite version of Money:

Pink Floyd - Money (Live, From ''Delicate Sound Of Thunder'')

The whole concert is epic but this version of money always stood out to me, the energy is just so intense and they really throw down

I love the Robinson Brothers....I've seen them together as the Black Crows and seen Chris with the Brotherhood band and Rich play with his own band.
They are powerful and exciting live anyway you put it but The Black Crows are just phenomenal live.

Robin Trower is also one of my fav's but my all time favorite live band has to be the Allman Brothers Band when Dicky Betts was still with them....My brother got to see them in 1970 before Duane died... at Watkins Glen, I think. They are just an amazing band that can effortlessly go into and out of different waves in the song over and over.

I also liked The Outlaws when Hughie Thomasson was still alive. Green Grass and High Tides is one of my growing up songs and it still gives me shivers to this day.

I dig a fair amount of the black crowes stuff too, I found their discography awhile back and listened to a bit of it for awhile.

CRB is way more my cup of tea though with their groovy psychedelic style. I saw CRB once and they were great, I was really high on mushrooms though and it got to be a bit much  Mainly becouse it was a small packed venue and was super loud, the speakers were literally shaking  I made it through a good portion of the show though, they have a ton of live shows up online as well :awesomenod:

The Allman Bro's are also great of course, would have been amazing to see them back in their prime. Warren Haynes is great too though.

Have you heard the show where Jerry and Boz Scaggs sits in with them?

My dad is way into vinyl, I have a decent little collection of random stuff he gave me + a few I picked up.

Pink Floyd is pretty intoxicating even without drugs, but even just stoned they can put me into a crazy trance like altered headspace :crazy2:

Electronic Music

From the crowd to the music, just so much energy. Theres no "we're too cool to dance"
types at those sorts of shows. Everyone just has so much fun and tons of good vibes and people just want to make new friends

Electronic music has ruined other shows of other genres for me at this point. Every other show just feels so lame now. People just stand around and kind of look bored. People are 100% engaged in it at electronic shows

Theres a few bands I would still like to see. Like Tool would be so cool

It's not about being too cool to dance it is about being entranced by the music to the point where dancing is redundant

Personally I don't really dance much but at really stellar shows I will get grooving a bit. If anything I feel like dancing is a "cool" showoff type thing to do in some situations. I have nothing against it I just don't usually feel the need. Many of the best shows I have been too put me in a trance and melted me into my seat for the duration :tongue2:

I like to just focus on the music, it's nice to close your eyes and just soak in the music sometimes. I also like to get to the front of crowds sometimes though.

Anyways here is another great live show:

Phil & CRB 8-28-16 Lockn' Festival Arrington, VA

Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky

I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

I saw the Allman Brothers 3 or 4 times around 1980. I wish I could have seen them before Duane Allman and Berry Oakley died.

Whipping Post Jam - Allman Bros w/ Jerry Garcia

I used to get stoned with my mom and she'd put on vinyl.  I had never tripped so I didn't understand a lot of it but it sounded really cool and I knew I liked music.

My dad is way into vinyl, I have a decent little collection of random stuff he gave me + a few I picked up.

Pink Floyd is pretty intoxicating even without drugs, but even just stoned they can put me into a crazy trance like altered headspace :crazy2:

Dude....thanks for that! never heard it before....I read Greg's book "My Cross to Bear" and he really didn't speak highly of the Dead in the beginning..said something about they didn't practice enough and took LSD which he didn't like at the time....Lol The Brothers were mushroom men! They loved their mushies. Was a shame that Duane and Barry died so young...I often wonder what kind of projects Duane could have got into throughout the years. His leads in Whipping Post and In Memory of Elizabeth Read are just magical....like he's streaming it from somewhere. Dicky and Warren did a great job and then Derek came in after Greg and Dicky couldn't get along...I have 2 copies of Live at Fillmore East in Vinyl that I need to dig out and spin the old turntable on again....I got rid of almost all my old pioneer system after vinyl became obsolete...whoda thunk it would make a comeback?

Speaking of bluegrass here is a great newgrass fusion group:

Brushfire Stankgrass performs "City Rats" at AHA AVL

Video has a short kind of annoying intro, really killer jam though. The guitarist is playing a moog guitar as they are at a moog event I believe.

I have been uploading a 4 hour + Allman Brothers concert featuring Jerry Garcia Boz Scaggs and Bill Kreutzman all night :awesomenod:

Should be done in the next hour or two and I will post it here, just look at this glorious setlist:

01 Wasted Words
02 Done Somebody Wrong
03 One Way Out
04 Stormy Monday
05 Midnight Rider
06 In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed
07 Statesboro Blues
08 Southbound
09 Come & Go Blues
10 Ramblin' Man
11 Trouble No More
12 Jessica
13 Les Breers In A Minor-
14 Drums-
15 Les Brers In A Minor
16 Whipping Post Jam*
17 Linda Lou/Mary Lou*
18 Hideaway/You Upset Me*
19 Bo Diddley* -
20 Mountain Jam* -
21 Bo Diddley*
22 Save My Life*
23 Blues Jam*
24 You Don't Love Me*
25 Will The Circle Be Unbroken* -
26 Mountain Jam*

* with Boz Scaggs, Jerry Garcia & Bill Kreutzman

Several 20-30 minute jams and it's a new years show :crazy2:

You're very welcome! Like I said I found the whole show finally and am uploading it to youtube as I realized it was missing. Here is where I got it:

http://thesteamengine.net/home/download-the-allman-brothers-band-1973-12-31-cow-palace-san.html

It is split into 4 parts all of which I downloaded only to find they all have many of the same songs I believe  I just deleted the doubles though.

Seems many of the best musicians die young, I think it is a lifestyle thing. They live such intense lives they just burn out quicker.

Thankfully many musicians take it easier and manage to live into a ripe old age while still making great music

Vinyl is awesome, FLAC's I love just as much for the convenience as I don't have a nice record player. I have a FLAC vinyl rip of the Filmore East live album :sun:

5% to go on the Allman Brothers show with Jerry, will post the video here in a few minutes.

They are one of my favorite "newgrass" bands, they play some more traditional stuff as well as a ton of amazing fusion.

Here is another one of my favorite live videos of theirs:

Brushfire Stankgrass on Mount Dungeon part 4

They play 2 songs in that video, first one is has a great spanish jazzy/ rock vibe and the other is just a super groovy/ rockin bluegrass jam :awesomenod:

Here is yet another, this one I uploaded, it takes 2 different parts of a tune from 2 different concerts and combines them:

Brushfire Stankgrass: Party Suite parts 1-4

Not sure if it is a cover or what but it is a super groovy jam I listened to regularly for awhile  I have some more live stuff of theirs uploaded on my channel and you can find a decent amount of their shows on the Archive.orgs's live music archive. That is where I got the audio for the videos I uploaded, I really need to try and buy their albums

I love that they blend reggae and bluegrass in some songs :tongue2: they blend a lot of great musical elements that you wouldn't think of going together well

Also they do some other cool experimental stuff like using a ringmod and envelope filter/ auto wah on banjo which I had never heard done before :crazy2:

Guthrie Govan is definitely one of the best live musicians out there today as well:
