Best way to reset sleeping cycle? * 1
    #23938306 - 12/18/16 02:51 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

I always end up like this, where I stay up later every night and wake up later every afternoon. Currently I fall asleep at around 6 - 7 am and wake up around 3pm. I literally work from the moment i wake up till i go to sleep. I pretty much sleep right where I work.

It's been fine like this for a few weeks because I haven't had to directly deal with any clients for work so i have no set schedule, but starting tomorrow I have to be up at 9am for meetings and stuff if I want to get paid.

I need to immediatly switch to this normal schedule. Do you think I should do an all nighter tonight and then go to sleep tomorrow around midnight? Or is there a better way?

I have the same exact issue as you except I put a lot of effort into designing my life to be forgiving and simple, so I am never on anyone elses schedule.
If you want to fix your schedule real quick you take several sleeping pills at 8pm tonight, they will knock you down and you'll wake up 8 or so hours later.
Wake up at least an hour or more before you have to leave to give yourself time to wake up, have a coffee, relax for a moment, etc.

If you have a few minutes left(once you're completely ready) just sit silently and don't entertain even a single thought, just be the witness for 10minutes or so and don't follow any thoughts, just let them come and go for 10 mins. Some will call this meditation, but for me it just feels like an extremely deep rest while awake, and I feel a lot better after just 10mins of silence.

The best way is to deprive yourself of sleep until you have 6-8 hours before you need to be awake.

Have you tried melatonin? Taking it 30 - 45 minutes before you need to sleep should help. Though you need to lie in bed and rest for it to take effect, as light and activity will just tell your body to stay awake rather than use the melatonin in your system, and it will be converted to something else if not used to sleep.

Then your sleep schedule should be reset for the most part. No need to continually redose it, melatonin is best used sparingly - like not more than once or twice a week.

I'd say you're better off going to bed at 9 or 10PM tonight, waking up around 6 or 7AM than you are staying awake through the night. You'll crash and your cycle could be more messed up afterwards. Not eating keeps you more alert if you choose this route though, and a 12 hour fast can reset your cycle too.

I sometimes have to work 24 hour shifts, and have the following day off, and then have to go back to work at 530AM the day after. I always just pop a melatonin and go to bed at 9 regardless. Might wake up in the middle of the night, but as long as I don't go on my phone I typically get back to sleep and am reset for the week.

All nighters usually work for me

U can also try getting at least an hour or two of sleep, for example u can try falling asleep at 4am instead of 6 or 7, and waking up at 9am, ud be lucky to get more than two hours of sleep out of that, but hey anything helps, even just laying on ur bed with the lights off and eyes closed helps. What ure essentially doing is trying to get enough rest to where u can easily pull an all nighter..

you don't 'reset' your sleeping cycle. it's always on the same clock as it always was.

all you can do is hope your body can adjust to a new pattern, in time. start sleeping earlier, getting up earlier, eventually things might balance out- but you gotta get up early, and go to sleep early, otherwise, you're not going to be on a regular day/night cycle.

I've used ambien for 9-12 hour jet lag and it's not perfect but a whole lot better than no ambien.  Careful my wife gets dependent on it by the time the bottle of leftovers runs out.

Melatonin(best/safest), Benzos or Alphablockers are effective at resetting your sleep cycle because you can use them to send yourself to sleep at the right time so that you can smooth out a sleep cycle/circadian rhythm.

i find staying up untill the time u have to sleep is the best way.

Also, exhausting yourself with excerise or mental exerxion (sp?) is good too, that way u HAVE to sleep, u have no choice

I used to have insomnia, but with my new night 12 hour shift night schedule, that aint a problem anymore!

I disagree with the sleeping pill method for long-term use, if you become dependent on them you won't be able to fall asleep without them and then you're stuck in the same predicament a week later.

OP you should stop using all electronics especially the computer in bed. If you can, use the computer and cell phone in another room at all times, or at least away from your bed. You should only be on your bed for sleeping only.

I'm now laying down right now on my yoga mat about to sleep lol. I don't think electronics in bed is bad? Never heard of that.

No pills taken, I am devout anti over-the-counter drugs, I believe they are often toxic. I am also anti-benzos, unless for partying

I have a pot of coffee ready to chug when I wake up in 4-5 hours, then I'll probably go to sleep around mid night tomorrow and all will be good with my schedule

Really, you've never heard of that? I'm surprised, I thought everybody knew that.

It's bad for a few reasons. One, electronics produce certain EMF and radio waves and blue lights that actually prevents the brain from releasing melatonin and falling asleep. This is a scientifically proven phenomenon, by the way. Check here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/blue-light-from-electronics-disturbs-sleep-especially-for-teenagers/2014/08/29/3edd2726-27a7-11e4-958c-268a320a60ce_story.html?utm_term=.e1d6aa3ff803

Two, the biggest reason however, is because your brain needs to associate the mattress as a place for sleep only. If you are used to using a computer in your bed, or you're doing other activities while awake on your bed for hours at a time, then your brain is not trained to view the bed as a place to sleep. Consequently, when you enter your bed, you feel alert instead of sleepy, because of how you have trained your body and brain, and thus it's more difficult to fall sleep.

If you only use the bed as a place to fall asleep, then your mind eventually learns to associate sleep with the mattress.

The EMF and ELF debate as to wwther we are affected is not too convincing to me, I've done some serious probably over 10 hours research on it.

Personally I sleep really well pretty much single night and I definitely use a computer or phone minutes before i shut my eyes every single night.

Okay, well like I said, the biggest reason is because your brain needs to be trained to associate sleep with the bed. If you're using the computer and doing other things in bed, then your brain doesn't recognize the bed as a sleeping area.

Do you want advice on how to reset your sleep cycle or not? Because I'm telling you, that is how. I used to have the same sleeping problem until I stopped using my laptop in bed.

Yeah, I understand people live with roommates and therefore their living space is limited. In this case, you can still use the laptop in the same room, just don't use it on your actual bed. Use it in a chair or on a sofa or bean bag or something.

1. Don't use drugs to help you sleep
2. Exercise during the day
3. Don't take any naps during the day
4. Use the bed only for sleeping
5. Don't try to jetlag yourself into a normal pattern by staying up all day and crash sleeping.
6. If you need to, edge your current sleeping pattern either back or forwards an hour or so each day. Which ever is closest.
7. Once youre back to regular hours, set a schedule and stick to it everyday regardless, I.e. up at 7am , sleep 11pm

i haven't had a t.v. near my bed for years sometimes it's just the thought that might keep people awake or theyre at that age were they don't really get tired as much anymore because they aren't growing

even something like sunlight and exercise goes a long way
just being out in the sun or swimming in a pool will make your body considerably more tired than going to work for 8 hours and having sore legs

pot is awesome to have sometimes if you don't really do much with your life, because you can always hit the sack an hour early

when i don't have pot I don't get sick as much but I also have enough energy to stay up that last hour or so much energy i stay up an extra four hours and fuck my sleep up again

Melatonin for a few nights works well for me.  Just know that it's only supposed to be used for a couple of nights at a time.  I've heard of people using melatonin almost every night, pretty sure that can have dire consequences on your REM sleep patterns.  Some people swear by 5-HTP as well, which if I'm not mistaken  metabolizes into melatonin.

I had to reset my sleep schedule from 10PM-12AM going to sleep, to going to sleep at 2PM or 3PM and waking up at like 11PM or 12AM. Everytime at 3pm I get super tired and can fall asleep right away. I work 1-9AM shifts.

Get drunk to pass out at 11PM. Wake up at 8AM.

Repeat 3 days in a row.

Your idea is terribad.

I went to sleep at 6 am, woke up at 9am. Will go to sleep at midnight probably. Worked out fine  so far

Yes, all good ideas. If you exercise during the day, you will naturally feel sleepy at night because your body has exerted all its energy.

No naps, and as I previously said, use the bed only for sleeping. Not talking on the phone, not eating, not using your computer, or anything else. Sexual activity is the only thing permitted on the bed besides sleeping.
