We'll all be driving hundreds of thousands of miles in our lifetime so why not get something out of it for free by using a gas card or rewards card that I keep hearing about. What are the best ones? I'd prefer something that can be used at a variety of gas stations and not just a single specific one, if it even exists?

Chase freedom card with the 5% cash back in rotating categories. If the category includes any kind of grocery store, drug stores, gas stations (obviously) you can buy gift cards for whatever gas station is cheapest.
Safeway/vons has gas stations and will offer you additional discounts through rewards points, and often gift cards are part of promotional categories that allow you to get even more rewards points than the standard purchases.
This time of year Safeway also had a coupon for $10 off MasterCard and visa gift cards on $150 of each. Activation fee is $6 so you are instantly buying money for 2.6% off. Plus whatever cash back bonus your CC is giving you on top of that, plus it counts as a gift card purchase and will rack up rewards points. Then you get back in line and buy $300 worth of gas cards.
Or if at any point you want to cash out the gift cards and just keep the rewards points it helps to have merchant services that allow you to process credit cards. Between the coupon and the cash back on your credit card it should cover the processing fees.
Under ideal circumstances you can end up with some crazy shit going on. Swipe the credit card for $292 and end up with $300 in gas cards, $14.50 cash back from your credit card, and almost 2400 Safeway gas rewards points which give you $1 per gallon on your next 2 fillups ans 40 cents off the 3rd one. For maximum discounted gas I make my wife bring her car as well and fill 2 cars in the same transaction (since Safeway gas discounts apply to only a single transaction).
So yes. The answer is yes.

Just make sure you don't lose track of your credit cards you're churning. The idea is that they should be paying you to borrow money. If you are paying interest you're doing it wrong. With a little creativity you should never have to pay for a cash advance or a balance transfer. Those merchant accounts really come in handy...

I just got a american express rewards card a couple months ago that gives 6% back at grocery stores, 3% for gas, and 1% for everything else. So far it has been decent, although unfortunately man places do not take american express, including the discount grocery store we go to. We plan to buy gift cards for places we go to regularly at grocery stores that do accept american express for the 6% discount to try to get a little more back.
So really I don't have much experience with reward cards, but hoping it will be worth it in the long run. I need to find the loopholes like shaggyp mentioned up above to really get the most out of it though.

I have a Shell Rewards Card that u manually attach your debit/credit card too.
I havent yet attached my debit card, cause i lost my old one via a thief and just hadnt renewed my new one yet
But its nice to get random cents off gallons from spending money. Plus Shells pretty cool overall. I like their "style".
