cactus root shooting from side what should I do?
    #23936267 - 12/17/16 07:19 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

It's been awhile since I actually had something worthy to ask here. I have a small cacti roughly the height of a 16oz coke bottle and probably a week ago it started sprouting a root from the side. I'm unsure what I should do about it, I was thinking I should maybe transplant into a bigger pot and maybe give it a small taste of some ferts I believe I have a 10-1-1 guano left around here somewhere that I would likely use. my other idea was chopping it close to the new root and making a second cactus and still going about the transplant into a bigger pot but I haven't really read much on cactus and succulent care so if anyone has a good plan I'm up for advise thanks in advance for the help.

I am having the same issues.  I read it may be vestigial leaves, but I did not like how that sounded.  The vestigial leaves are apparently under the areoles.

The one I have looks like a root coming from random spots on the spines.  This looks like a little horn on mine.  Some of them are coming from yellow spots on mine.  What about yours?

I'll post a picture in a couple minutes. I checked out the vestigial leaves doesn't seem to far fetched but it doesn't seem very plausible either. its just one little shoot and it was a whitish yellow and then it turned green was hoping it was a new like arm ik that's not right but I don't know the word for what I'm thinking of.

Let it go.

Is it a bud or a root?

Buds can turn into flowers or tops/ branches.

If it is sending out roots something about how it's planted isn't right.  That or it sent a root ot scab bing.  I had dozens and don't recall roots above ground.

That is my first attempt at posting a picture btw.  I did not thin k it was going to be that difficult to post a pic from my phone.  Phone -> paint -> word -> pdf -> nobody cares.

Those are roots.  Probably because of he bridge going on there.

I planted a trich on it's side and it was cool.  Do all sorts of weird and fun shit with trichs!

The section on the left side is about 18 inches.  Should I just segment it now and try to use the roots in those pics to start new cactus plants? Use the majority to make my juice, and then turn what you see in the pic into 2 separate plants?

That from seed?  Very skinny.

That is a root and I would wait till she is fat at the top and cut, scab and plant the fat part.

Don't worry about roots.  Unless it's a symptom, which I never encountered.

cool thank you for the input. yeah it was from a seed I had three gave one as a gift and the other shriveled and died as with the rest of my collection, sucks but I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things I missed my place being full of plant life.

someone from the garden hooked me up. they pretty much gave me a starter kit of an assortment of different seeds. I can't remember if it was a hybrid or not it's been a long time and I was always kinda unorganized.
