Use it or trash it?

I inoculated my popcorn from agar wedges 17 days ago. Is this the infamous lipstick mold? Can I spawn this to bulk substrate or should I trash it?

Hehe. Back to the old drawing board. I've got some micropore tape now. Probably fucked it up by putting the tyvek inside the lid and filled it too much. Oh well, I'll chalk it up as a lesson. Thanks guys.

That's the best attitude to have.
How long were these sterilized? Did the mold start from where the agar wedge was or did it start from several areas? We should make clear that the other processes were done properly as to prevent a repeat occurrence.

I sterilized them 2 hours in a pot, which should have been plenty. From reading more after the process, I found a lot of places where it could have went bad. My mycelium from the agar was only a second transfer for one (I have 2 clean 3rd transfer dishes now). The tyvek inside the lid for two, and I think my colonization temp was a little high. I was colonizing at 75 degrees for 2 weeks and had no mold, then I kicked the temp up to just below 80 degrees and 2 days later they turned pink. They were almost done before the contamination set in so I can't tell where the wedges were. I expected to see contamination a lot earlier if there was any but I'm not that experienced so I'm sure I'll see a lot that I'm not expecting.

That all seems fine except "2 hours in a pot". 2 hours at 15PSI in a pressure cooker would be enough (1 hour 30 minutes is optimal). However just in a pot on the stove at 2 hours is not going to sterilize it at all. I have had plenty of success with this method but you must leave them in the water(or above the water to steam sterilize) for 6 to 8 hours. (small jars 6 hours larger jars 8 works for me every time) This could be the entire cause of the contam.

Interesting. I followed a tek and they didn't use a pc and steamed in the pot for under 2 hours. Multiple people posted it and even saw it on youtube, all under 2 hours in the pot. I'll try 7 hours for the next batch. Thanks for the insight.

No problem, when I first started I tried steam sterilizing for a few hours and got all contams as well, I read some techniques from RogerRabbit and he said 6-8 hours is optimal, and I tend to trust that guy.
I've had no contams with steam sterilization ever again.

Ah yes, Mr. Rabbit. I think he's a professor teaching mycology. I trust him for sure. I've been watching his videos. "ultimate indoor mushroom tutorial" is great. A lot of useful info there. Wish I would have seen the popcorn one on there. I'd have done it right the first time.

You have a mold called fusarium. Toss the bitch.
If a few kernels are pink, right after you PCd, sure I could understand not tossing. But when you have a jar of white mycelium and the classic fusarium spore patches, toss the bitch.

Yeah I agree that corn is generally a bacterial landmine. Cleaner grain sources are what you should be looking for. WBS can be clean and it can also be dirty, especially if it has cracked corn in it.
Wheat, millet/Milo, rye, rgs etc all can have lower CFUs as well, depending on area/brand.
However this is fusarium. It's a mold that dies easily in a PC which means the spores got in after the PC. Whether it's a filter failure, inoculant being dirty, or bad techniques, the grains in this case aren't the things to be blaming.

I can get WBS, but I don't have the room for another gadget in the kitchen. I live in Europe and the kitchens are tiny here. My wife has got shit all jammed up with juicers and all kinds of shit we rarely use. No room for a pc and the popcorn tek is the only one besides pf I've seen with no pc. I just assumed bird seed steaming for 8 hours wouldn't be cool.
I guess I need more practice with my sterile procedure too. All 6 of my popcorn jars were contaminated. I also did some brf cakes in 16 oz jars but I think they are all contaminated as well. Looked like something slimy in there and the growth of the mycelium looked like it was hitting a barrier like it was running into bacteria and stopped. I'm not really sure. I dumped a couple and inspected them. They smelled perfectly good and thought I fucked up by dumping them when there were just patches that were extra moist substrate from steam getting in or something. I guess I can post the ones on this thread and have you guys take a look. I'll post some pictures in a few.
BTW I never pced the corn, only steamed for 2 hrs. I'm doing an 8 hr steam at the moment.

I saved 2 jars. These are them with photos from multiple sides.
I knocked the popcorn jars up with agar, first time doing that...
The brf cakes I knocked up 14 days ago with spore syringe I made myself, first time doing that... actually this was my first time doing everything except growing a grow kit I bought in Amsterdam.
I decided very late to keep the grow going. My substrate was contaminated and my caps weren't opening up so I couldn't get a spore print, so I cloned a pin and did a transfer then used wedges for my corn.. while my agar was growing a cap just barely opened up enough and i got a weak spore print from that so i tried the brf too. TBH I'm not 100% sure my agar plate was uncontaminated. I see in your signature that you've got some agar experience. Maybe I should also have you look at the ones I plan on using this time to be sure? I can post them here right? this is a contamination thread.

Front side

Back side - there is spots where i used scotch tape and the glue stayed on, not sure if that will screw things up for the view.

Yeah especially for corn you need a PC. Still tho 2 hour steam would leave bacteria alive. Fusarium dies at 130F for 30 minutes.
Yes you can post all contaminations in here.
Yeah those plates look alright, but very overgrown if you are looking for contaminations.
The first brf jar has a mold sprouting. Other jars have minor bacteria. How did you print this cap? Sounds like bacteria got in somehow.
You can also do li from agar as inoculant for pf tek cakes. I'd actually recommend that more than spore syringes.

They don't have karo here, nor clear liquid malt. I'd love to do a LC.
I'll try this plate, I have another I can make transfers from if this doesn't work out. I still have a bit of spore print too but I'm scared to use it since my brf jars contaminated. Some of the foil was sticking outside of my cup that i had over my mushroom. I cut that extra off inside my SAB. Dunno if that was a bad move. oh well, Ill just keep trying till i get it right.
