is it constitutional to allow someone to choose whether or not they want a lighter sentence?
yes
I guess you could call it lighter, but you could also call it unusual.
Some of the people could claim the sentence he laid upon them was humilitating, or something of that sort. The constitution doesnt say cruel and unusual punishment is okay if the one being charged chooses it.
But then again i dont see anyone complaining, his sentences are fucking jokes and very preferable to going to jail.
they were each given a choice, the other option was jail.

for minor crimes, yes.
yes, this is how it should be done unless you're dealing with repeat offenders, maybe of more major crimes.

At risk people like who?
What exactly brought you to this website?
And what is with the holier than thou attitude?
It makes you sound like an ignoramus when you post things like that
Are you used to staring down your nose at people?
Or are you really just an imbecile?

I agree.
I see nothing wrong with what this judge is doing, he gives the offenders a choice between jail or that. He's not forcing them to do these things... and many times they will gladly take the sentence over jail.

This was actually a King of the Hill episode. It's the episode where Hank Hill buys fishing bait from some black market source, and accidentally ends up buying crack off a dealer lol, and he gets busted and sentenced by one of those eccentric judges who hands him an unusual sentence that matched his crime.
