Substance Abuse, Mental Illness Deaths Have Skyrocketed in Rural America

The number of people in the US dying from mental disorders and substance abuse has multiplied over the past 30 years.

A study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed those deaths increased about 200 percent in more than 2,000 US counties, with an increase of 1,000 percent in some regions of Kentucky, West Virginia and Ohio. These statistics paint a startling picture of life in rural America, especially in struggling Appalachia.

"While the leading causes of death are similar across counties, we found massive disparities in the rates at which people are dying among causes and communities," explained lead author Laura Dwyer-Lindgren in a statement. "For causes of death with effective treatments, inequalities in mortality rates spotlight areas where access to essential health services and quality of care needs to be improved."

The study, conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington in Seattle, reviewed deaths related to 21 illnesses—from cancer to HIV—to get a thorough picture of the death rate from certain causes across the country.

The study pointed to some clear disparities. For example, the Kusilvak Census Area in Alaska had the highest mortality rate increase at 131 percent, while Manhattan’s death rate dropped 72 percent. As for Kentucky, West Virginia and Ohio, some counties saw a rapid increase in deaths due to schizophrenia, alcohol use disorders, drug use disorders and eating disorders, according to the study. Nationally, these diseases killed 814,391 people from 1980 to 2014, and the rates increased through that time in nearly every country surveyed.

"We know that unequal medical access and quality of care create health disparities in the US for many causes of death, while other causes are linked to risk factors or policies," Dr. Ali Mokdad, professor of Global Health at IHME and study co-author said in a statement. "Indeed, this study will inform the debate on how to improve the health of our nation."

This pisses me off so bad.  Mental illness is the most underfunded disease in the world and yet, every single person in the world will be affected by it one way or another.  The people that are dying can't barely afford rent and food, and it's that stress of not being able to afford rent or food that's exacerbating the mental health issues.  If they can't afford food or rent, they surely can't afford a luxury item like mental wellness.

It's like, we care more about the fucking cats and dogs with PTSD than we do human beings and it makes me sick.  All the time, I see pet adoption listings where the animal obviously was abused and has trauma.  Everyone is always like, "Oh!  That's so sad!  How can I help?"  These are the same folks who, if I came to them and told them I had PTSD, would call me a lunatic, crazy, and I should be on all kinds of meds and in a hospital.

I'm not trying to say we shouldn't care about the animals, but at the same time, we should afford ourselves the same level of care and compassion we give them.

It is definitely unfortunate mental health care costs so much. A good doctor will take most insurances, but depending on the area the wait times could be very long. I would bet in a rural area there are only a handful of doctors. The average session with a psychiatrist is easily around $300 without insurance.

Maybe these mental diseases are natures way of trying to keep us in check.  No other creature here harbors and cares for the feeble and or retarded.  Really gotta wonder if all the health problems we have are due to us reinforcing those inferior genetics in our society.

Maybe a child with cancer should just be allowed to die, maybe the crazies should just be let freeze to death, maybe people poisoning themselves with drugs and alcohol happens to be doing good, we just dont see it.

We're 3 decades away from 10 billion people.  Thats less time than I've been alive.  Do we really need to struggle to keep more people alive?

Just posing questions, not so much making statements. (And I support animal welfare moreso than human welfare)

Yeah, I recently went to a VA hospital in a rural area of the south. They have some people there that are totally unresponsive and are being kept alive completely by machines and people. I wonder why the family is doing this, or if the person didn't have an advanced directive or a DNR. It is really confusing, infuriating and saddening to see people in this state being kept alive for no reason whatsoever (that I can see). There is also a test for down syndrome. That could be completely eliminated. People are so afraid of death and what happens or could happen so they cling to fear and do things that don't make sense to me. Some people do it out of selfishness. They just want the person that is dying to be alive for as long as they want them too no matter how bad the dying person is. Sometimes the dying person is selfish and writes out an advance directive to keep them alive by any means possible even if they will never recover.

I agree most deaths from substance abuse stem from immaturity and the lack of upward economic ability. Some lady was on the news awhile ago for being upset Trump won because this was the first time in 17 years she had healthcare. I'd argue that once these penniless people have their healthcare ripped away some will choose an earlier death.

They probably could have made-up some placeholder kind-of job, for the state, and paid the person a lower-middle class salary, for the same amount it takes to subsidize an addiction.

I have seen different plants and animals, raised from babies, and can't think of any specie, in nature, where more than 1/3 are so unfit.
