Wheat vs Millet
    #23934541 - 12/17/16 05:30 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I have access to those two grains locally (among others that I think are inferior) and now I have to decide which one I'm going to use.

I know that wheat is very similar to rye and that a lot of people love it, but on the other hand, I can only see advantages in millet over wheat based on the info I've gathered:
· Easier preparation (FooMan's WBS prep).
· It's a smaller grain, offering more inoculation points.
· It's less prone than wheat to have high endospore counts.
· Birds like it

So, if anyone here have used both*, I'd like to hear your opinion on this, why should I choose one over the other? Am I missing something here if I can only see advantages in millet over wheat?

* If you haven't, fuck off! :awethumb:

TBH, the smallest grain I used was sorghum, and even that is hard for me to get.

i think noc points for high spawn ratio bulk is over rated though. a 1:1-1:2 i don't think can get much faster with more grains.  with g2g and smaller spawn ratios, then more noc points makes sense.

real rap tho- the best grain isn't the cheapest, the smallest, the easiest to get, etc….it is the one that give YOU the least troubles.

:whathesaid:

I like bigger grain like wheat or rye more than millet because it is easier to get the right water content and it makes less mess. I tried WBS / millet only a few times because my kitchen looked like a mess when I worked with small grain.

Well I plan on doing wedge>grains>G2G expansion, so maybe millet is better suited for this than wheat. I've read there are several types of millet and I don't know if all of them are equally good. I wonder if there's anything I should take into account before buying millet?

:takingnotes: But FooMan's tek seems pretty straightforward and afaik, it's easy to get the right water content with it? I don't mind a little mess though

I had bursted/exploded grains. It seems like boiling/soaking times need to be adjusted for different brands. I also don't like to put wet grains into my jars.

That's how I make my grain jars:

  • soak rye/wheat for ~12 hours
  • boil for ~ 10-12 minutes
  • drain
  • spread the grains on a big surface (while hot)
  • wait until it feels dry to the touch
  • load jars
  • PC

That always gives me a perfect water content without bursted grains.

If I see a good offer I'll give WBS/millet another try.
It's years ago that I tried to prep WBS.

Thanks enlightenment, wheat looks like a more "professional" grain if that even makes sense. Fuck it, I'll give both a try.

I'm going to leave a quote here. It's a random noob who wrote something that may be interesting...

If you know how a straight simmer for 20-30 min, steam strain, and jar up. 1 hour from measuring them out and in the sterilizer. Works great for oats, rye, wheat.

For millet or WBS boil water, drop grains into water and simmer for 10-15 min. Then leave to soak for 40 min. Then strain and rinse with cold water. Jar up wet. Then PC for 10 min, drop pressure and shake to distribute moisture. Then PC for 90 min.

Perfect prep and no long soak required.

Also do what cheapest.

I can get 100lbs of rye berries for around about 90$.

That's about enough to do 32 mono's with.

Sorry man, just woke up! I don't even have a pot of coffee in me yet!

The way i see it, they both work and are tried and true... I've used both also. I hate trying to get the sunflower seeds out of the wbs bags.
