http:/ the stem is hollow i found about 15 of these in a canyon

Its a little late for Chanterelles  where I am here in oregon.  Notice how the gills on the mushroom you found pretty much stop at the stem?  Chanterelles wont do that.  Their gills will continue down the stipe.  Also their gills arent exactly gills.. theyre more like ridges.. or maybe "primitive gills" if that helps.  They( the gills) arent as deep as the mushroom you found.  Chanterelles will smell like apricots(or even smell like nothing)  and their color, while it does range from time of year and location, will be dark orange to light almost pinkish. 
They are also michorrizal(spelling?)  Which means that they are found in close symbiotic relationships with particular trees.

I think what you found is a Russula of some sort, most likely NOT edible.

Yeah it's a Lactarius, maybe L. alnicola.

I was also thinking maybe Lactarius but saw none of the "milk", so I didn't want to say. Could be, though.
