Steve Earle, who I like a lot say he will stand on his coffee table and swear that Townes was a better songwriter than Dylan. I disagree, but I respect the opinion. Townes and Earle were close. Early on Townes went to Earle's house and Townes played Russian Roulette with himself. It freaked Earle out, and he was pretty hard edged himself probably a junkie at the time. I don't think Steve and Townes were ever too close after that. Steve Earle said Townes was the greatest songwriter but the worst mentor ever.
I used to play the Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard cover of Pancho and Lefty on the juke box.
My favorite Townes Van Zandt story was the making of the Big Lebowski. The Cohen Bothers wanted to use the Townes version of the Stones "Dead Flowers". Townes said he wanted a hundred thousand dollars. The Cohen Bothers said they couldn't afford that. They were independent filmmakers. So the song was out. Then Townes found out that Jeff Bridges (Lebowski) was going to say "The Eagles Suck" . Van Zandt immediately contacted the Cohen Brothers and said they could use the song for nothing.
-------------------- "The Rolling Stones will break up over Brian Jones' dead body" John Lennon I don't want no commies in my car. No Christians either. The worst thing about corruption is that it works so well,

Thanks for sharing that info Brian. I didn't know about those stories. Townes seemed like he had his demons, but damn he could write and put feeling into his music. I don't listen to him all the time, but on occassion I have sit back and soak it in.

I love me some Townes Van Zandt. His version of Dirty Old Town is so sad and beautiful at the same time.
