HPPD and stimulants.
    #23928352 - 12/15/16 04:21 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

I have HPPD. I noticed it probably around my 3rd or 4th trip, and it has been totally manageable. Will go away on its own almost completely with a little over 2 months of abstinence, and doesn't honestly really bother me. The only thing I get a little worked up over is worrying about it becoming worse like the horror stories I've read about severe DP/DR but at this point I think that if I were going to be susceptible to DP/DR I would have felt it by now, and I have no symptoms of either, just usually mild visual distortions. Mainly things appear to be swaying, warping, shifting or breathing when they are not, a bit more visual snow than pre psychs, a slightly louder than usual ringing in my ears (I think, although I have subjected myself to much loud music.) and occasionally some sort of colorful fractal or geometric pattern, generally with eyes closed. All in all, a small price to pay for all of the wisdom, teachings, and bliss I have been fortunate enough to experience.

I have had ADHD/ADD my whole life, and it has gotten better with age, especially in the last couple of years. It was never bad enough to require meds or accommodations at school, however, my mental work load has recently gone from a 2/10 to a 9/10 and I have been struggling a bit more than I know I would without ADD, so I decided to go to my doctor. I ended up getting a trial prescription for Adderall, more specifically dextroamphetamine sulfate, it works great for what it is supposed to do, I am able to focus for whole minutes at a time without so much as taking my eyes off the page, however, it has a side effect on me specifically that is not listed. It seems to aggravate my HPPD, but in an interesting and enjoyable way. It seems to make the visual distortions of swaying letters, or breathing walls much more prominent, while almost completely stopping visual snow, and geometric patterns (with eyes open) and it makes the swaying/breathing change from slightly choppy/unpredictable to extremely smooth clear and pleasant. It reminds me of the first time I experienced acid visuals after having only ever tripped on shrooms.

The duration of this exaggeration of visuals seems to be limited to a few hours longer than the noticeable effects of the Adderall where the snow then increases back to how it was prior, and the breathing decreases. My question is, has anybody heard about this effect of stimulants exaggerating HPPD but only for the duration of the stimulant? and considering it doesn't really bother me, in fact despite the visuals being quite a bit stronger than usual, I can very easily ignore them as I read/write and easily get into the Adderall groove, should I be worried about this effect? I really enjoy how productive I can be with this drug and understand that I only really need it on my heavy days, so I won't be taking it daily, but I don't want to not have it as an option when the pile of work gets tall. And I don't want to/don't think it will help to talk to my doctor about this because most doctors seem to not know what HPPD is, and it's such a diverse set of symptoms and intensities that respond completely differently to different things in different people, so it would be nearly impossible for her to judge what my HPPD is like vs the next guy and how it should be approached, however, fellow HPPDers may understand what I am talking about and could have more experience with these symptoms than I, making you guys my best bet about information about this.

To be clear, I don't want to be told to stop using Adderall immediately unless somebody somewhat qualified really thinks it's absolutely necessary. I do have a method to nearly completely rid myself of HPPD in 2-3 days if need be, so if I notice things getting worse I will take precautions.

I want to continue to use Adderall as needed, and if I manage to abstain from psychedelics see if my HPPD will reduce as expected, stay the same due to Adderall, or increase due to Adderall and go from there. I just want to see what you guys think.

If you wanna get rid of HPPD you should stay away from all drugs including caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. Nobody can tell you how exactly the adderall effects the HPPD. I would assume that taking adderall daily would make it worse especially if you dont sleep enough.
