N. Cal Azurescens? * 1
    #23928231 - 12/15/16 02:13 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Habitat:
Woodchipped hillside. Years on years developed

Gills:
Pics.

Stem:
Pics,
Cap:
Distinct Umbo.
Frail and fragile like Allenii. Not tough or meaty like Cyan.

Spore print color:
Psilocybe color. Printing now..

Bruising:
Blue

Other information:
Found these in a spot with lots  of genetic diversity. 4 species. 1 spot.
Allenii, hoping Azure, Ovoid/Baeo, Cyan.

All weekend and all this week, i've been harvesting haul after haul.
I've seen alot of Cyans, and alot of Allenii. I am very confident this is not either of those. If it is, its definitely NOT a cyan, but a crazy Allenii.
http://imgur.com/a/nZfUS - Be sure to see the pictures from the 14th of thursday.

So some of you may have already seen some of these pictures from the other week, but i decided to include them into todays' pictures, for it is at the same spot. Same phenotype or morphology in fruit.

Definitely not cyan, resembles allenii slightly, but I would say they are azures due to the very pronounced nipple. Looks like some flying saucers to me, congrats

Nice.  I'd say it looks like an azure.  Is there a weird "knuckle" just below the cap that pops without breaking the stem or the flesh?  I notice with azures a weird delicate part that kind of pops and the cap flops side to side slightly afterwards.  I need to come up with a name for it.

They do have a very pronounced umbo that makes want to say azurescens too. I have never seem them growing out of wood chips in person so I have some doubts. The only other thing it resembles are subaeruginosa which also can have a pronounced umbo. I'd be interested to see micro or dna work done.

Yes those are Psilocybe azurescens.

There is at least one shroomery user who puts azurescens spawn around public chipped places, if you found them closer to Sacramento then the bay area, I would not be surprised if he spawned that area.

Were they near the coast or more inland?

When I wrote the Psilocybe allenii paper, one of the things I worked on was how to reliably tell the difference between Psilocybe cyanescens and P. allenii.  How fragile they are was not one of the characteristics I came up with.  I will have to pay attention to that to see if it's a reliable way to separate them.

I would say the caps of allenii in Washington state tend to be more fragile than cyans ime. That being said some of the pictures of allenii from the bay area look pretty sturdy. Might have something to do with the gill spacing. Cyans gills tend to be more tightly packed from what I've seen. Perhaps this makes the cap more sturdy than allenii because of their wider gill spacing?

i had posted some that i thought were azures but i was told they were starved allenii but the thing is there's allenii a foot away growing in the same substrate without an umbo.

Kind of the same deal here. all of them had a nipple, seemed more fragile than allenii. there's normal looking allenii next to these in the same bed.

The red stem on older specimens is also a trait of azurescens.

Another way to know the difference between cyans azures and allenii.  Once the allenii have been dried they slide right off the dehydrator tray.  No stems or caps stuck in the holes.  Cyans and azures are a bit more brittle and thin.

Those could be waterlogged cyanofibrillosa or stunzii that look very dank.
Interesting
