Do you collect geological specimens?
I became interested in panning early this year. Didn't find any nuggets but I found nearly worthless items. 1 not so gemmy ruby and some really small garnet.
I would like to find better specimen in better areas if I am lucky. Can't really spend the money on buying at a premium.
Do you pan or buy collections of geology?

We have a user created forum for this. I'm not as big as some folk but I am lucky to live real close to a large crystal vein. I find shit like this in parking lots

(Not the best pic but it's a quartz crystal cluster)

I've not found anything particularly valuable yet. Thought I stumbled on gold last year and busted my ass on the creek bed trying to get to it. (Turned out to be zinwaldite which is a gold colored mica) I'd consider myself a rock hound and nature enthusiast. I'm just enjoying and appreciating and pick up pretty souvenirs from time to time

I found lot's of mica I thought perhaps was gold. Mica has insulation value and gold is an excellent conductor. A simple voltage meter will yeild test results.
Someone found a piece of quarts with a gold vein worth 50k two counties away. They think there is gold in bedrock miles down here. Reality is a lot harder than a dream sadly.

Gold inside quartz isn't uncommon at all. Though often enough it's not really worth the effort getting to the flakes inside. Not yet at least. Since you pan handle I'd try your luck downstream from that area.
One thing I'm trying to figure out is how the hell you stake a claim on things like that. I'm entertaining the idea of buying some land in an area renown for amazonite and kyanite but I'd rather go and get a personal claim first.
Zinwaldite is an interesting mica. Im glad I went ahead and got a handful - it's gold in some lights and black in others. Pretty cool

I have 9 mining claims for quartz, lead, aquamarine, tourmaline, agate, and a few other lesser minerals. I dig obsidian commercially for a living, and run my own small lapidary and jewelry business. I set up in quartzsite and Tucson during the winter and a few festivals in the summer. We leave for quartzsite in 11 days! Native gold or any metal is usually worth more in native form. Most gold mined is microscopic so they go after that for extraction.
So gold is worth a lot in Quartz. Usually more than it's weight of gold.
Staking a claim. Well you go prospecting and pay money to BLM. Pay early fees and it depends in the claim to how much. It can be really cheap fees. There are also claims for sale. As cheap as 3k for a small pacer claim and it goes up from there.
I live in Ohio and there is a prospecting group with claims. We have placer glacial gold. Also very hard to find diamonds that came down with the ice.
There are diamonds out west too but nobody really understands where those came from. Nobody has found the pipes. That I have read.
Just don't prospect where there are claims. Gotta see for signs or stones stacked up around public land. Mineral trespass is a felony so be real careful.

There is a shitload of coal around my area.... when i go hiking i don't have to use much firewood, more effective to pick coal off the ground and use it as fuel.

That's what I figured but I've seen prospectors go through a shit load of work to get tiny little gold flakes out of quartz that often weigh a few mg... And insist it's a good method. Imo it's not at all worth it unless you have machinery designed to do that.
I'd personally like a chunk of quartz that has visible gold flakes in it. I imagine alot of other collectors would too.

You want a Quartz with a big fat vein of gold and if it's crystallized gold that is pricy. Gold forms with quarts near by or together. Find a vein of Quartz and you may find gold.

Yeah I've seen pics of wellformed combinations and its beautiful. But I was talking about prospectors that fin quartz rocks in creeks and bust them up for little flakes of gold no bigger than a pencil point. And no more than a dime size collection of flakes per 5lb rock. Really seems quite silly to me. But if gold value keeps rising it won't be quite as silly I suppose.
Apparently BC Canada has some really good quartz/gold veins. Orgasmic finds up there.

This is the lr2000 site link. You really need to learn to use this site. https://www.blm.gov/lr2000/index.htm Here is a good youtube video that runs you through how to use the lr2000 site.

I'd be happy with a copper nugget. Just a highly pure nugget of any metal would be cool. Did find some sort of volcanic high metal objects. I'm guessing it's mostly nickle with a bit of Iron and what else. Not a beauty at all so I toss those.
