Depends on how far you want to take the investigation I suppose, maybe people will notice and support your efforts.
The real question is, do you use technology only available to them, back then, or do you use current technology?
What did the computers look like in the late 60s early 70s?
I could argue either way, but I lean much more on the side that we were never there. IMO, a little hard to believe that in under 9 years, they learned orbital mechanics and all the math and physics and sciences, let alone build the rockets and all that jazz that goes behind building rockets and what fuels to use and testing and quality control. Blah blah blah, yeah it's very possible, I suppose, but fuck, if they did go, those were some brave, stupid asses to strap themselves to rockets. Fuck that.

They suffered deaths. They got really lucky and had the tech and heroes that fulfilled some of their visions.
I think the world has too many problems and tech should be developed more for actual space colonies.
It is going to be bad if they try to go to Mars. No tech exists even on paper to leave Mars. Mars has too strong of gravity for the amount of full needed to break it's pull, to be feasible to bring to Mars. They will die there and likely badly.

So let's say you did start up this kick starter thing. You go to the moon and there's no sign that anything was discovered. Then what? What is the final greater outcome that you seek to accomplish from this? A more educated population? Do you think people will really suddenly start rioting and take back what belongs to them because they learn the moon landing was fake. You probably think you're further educated than most people for diving into conspiracy theories but in reality it keeps you just as distracted as someone spending their time researching Kim Kardashian.

The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary) Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful) Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

Well, you also have to consider Mars doesn't have the same atmosphere as earth, it's much thinner. One of the major problems in space travel from earth is getting out of the 'soup' that is the atmosphere, which is about 80km thick around earth. The red bull stratosphere jump was from about 110-112km, and he fell for a bit before hitting atmosphere, even having to plan jumping without any spin.
Orbital mechanics are interesting. I learned a lot from playing Kerbal Space Program, pretty much a space sim where you build rockets and space planes and rovers, launch them from a 10th scale earth with similar atmosphere, and explore a solar system full of planets and moons and even asteroids. Check it out, may change your mind on what it takes to get from planet to planet. If we can get off earth, we can get off Mars. In my dumb ass opinion.
