Question about poo to all you dung lovers
    #23925663 - 12/14/16 11:27 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hello everyone, I have a few questions about horse poo.

Sometime this week i am going to get some a whole bucket of horse poo from a horse ranch/farm, I know you have to dry it out before you use it correct?
Also, i am planning to lay it out and put it under a heater for days to dry it out, will this method work? If not what is the best way?
After all this is done done it have to sit before it used? as in does it have to be aged?
Last is how do you properly pasteurize the poo ?

hpoo needs to be well leached and dry. needs to be rained on a lot.
the nuggets of poo should crumble like a ball of dirt.

I hope you're doing this in the garage.

I don't think you actually have to dry it if I remember correctly. If you want to use it fresh, let it soak in water for a period of time (I wanna say 24 hours). This will leach out the ammonia in the poo into the water, which can then be discarded. Gathering it up in a tea towel or pillow case and wring the majority of the water out, and I think it's good to go after that. (Can someone please confirm? I'm gonna start looking for the source I found that information.) EDIT: Found it; that info comes from one of the articles in the Mushroom Info section (Growing Mushrooms > General Cultivation > Bulk Substrates > Using poo 101) It is mentioned that dry, aged poo is best because the beneficial bacteria have formed much stronger colonies.

That being said, I believe dried/aged poo works best. If you'd like to dry it out after leaching the ammonia out, a heater is a good first step, but I would also add a fan to expedite the process, since poo isn't something you wanna have to worry about sitting around for a long period of time.

Why didn't the farm horse eat the racetrack oats?

Because it gave him the runs

:rimshot:

It's winter time.  Burlap sacks of semi dry nuggets are good for storage and further drying.  If any moisture remains, the storage tote should not be sealed.

PASTEURIZE in jars.  Easy as 1 poo 3

Here's a question for you, BL: another member just posted about poo he used that was very old. Does the same issue affect properly dried poo? Like, if you get fresh poo, leach it, and dry it pretty quickly, will it last any longer than poo left in the fields?

Yeah, 24 hour soak in water will leach the ammonia out. Click the link in my first post; there's a whole tek there about how to prepare fresh horse manure.

You dont leech manure you dry it in the sun...amonia needs to evaporate not simlpy get washed out. Throw it outside for a week or more.

That's interesting; I've pretty much exclusively heard that a water soak will greatly expedite the leaching process. Does it have any effect at all, or is this a case of 100 threads of lies versus a dozen of the truth?

Leave it to RR he def knows but also i guess it can go both ways either soak it for a day and so and let dry or let sit out for a while and itll be leech whichever is best. But I rather leave it out its less of a mess
