I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

I have tried to get into hiphop/rap more, but I find it hard to, I was never big into it anyway. I might like a song here and there, but never feel a strong connection with it the way I feel with other forms of music.
Has anyone else felt this way?
When I was little I was exposed to lots of rap/hiphop because of being around a diverse group of people, and I always like beats, but really like the compositions of other types of music better, rap/hiphop are low on the totem pole of genres I like. If I listen to 50 songs, 2 or 3 might be rap/hiphop, if that many.

Hip hop speaks to my soul more than any type of music besides ambient music. I don't know why, as I'm a white boy from the suburbs, but hip hop just resonates with me like crazy. It's the rhythmic nature of it more than anything.
Hasn't always been that way either. Just the past 3-5 years or so. I was always a punk kid (still with eclectic tastes) before that.

@Fennario
i always loved hip-hop. it's like poetry to a beat. alot of if it garbage now, but there is some odd ins-and-outs of some good stuff...i like older stuff more. it's always sunny, nostalgic and happy- with the exception of some gangsta rap, but then again, i like the dark stuff too...like black metal, i like the dark side of music.
but then you can get the nice stuff...check this out
here is a happy song from Organized Konfusion
and here is a more serious song from another album- contrast this shit.
@hex_enduction
the portrayal of gangsta rap is misunderstood...people that listen to it and think to emulate it, are missing the people as much as the people who say it's a terrible influence.
it's suppose to portray a reality through music, as an artistic statement, like Mobb Deep did (to the point where the play their roles so well they seem like they are actually "gang bangers"- it's a role; people don't seem to realize that they came out of art school with that shit.
yeah, rap has always been the shit.
