Snurfing

I have an almost 50 year old Snurfer the performance racing model. It's still in good shape probably better than me! I broke it out yesterday and rode it down the hill a bunch of times. Didn't fall down which was good. I notice there is a new snurfer company with several different designs.
I'm thinking about taking it up to the real ski slope and being seriously retro. I think I could handle the bunny slope and maybe an intermediate run but moguls probably not. Fast and straight is reasonable as are sweeping turns, but carving is a bit tough. Mine is narrow and has a v rear end with a short aluminum fin, pretty cool design but all of maybe 8" wide...

snurfing seems like one of those things that would take a bunch of time and effort and falling to get good at.
cool shit though..

My buddy did it 2x right away without falling. If you can ride a bike or a scooter "you can do it". Having the leash to hold onto makes life easier. Also you just mostly take it straight down the hill, and once you wear in a path you go faster next time because it's packed down. Sure you can fall but unlike skiing or snowboarding, you aren't attached to anything. At some point if you do lose your balance often you will be running down the hill and maybe doing a roll fall if you are moving too fast or really lose your balance but you at least get a step or two to not have that awkward fall. Skiing is horrible for the wrenching falls that hurt you, snurfing I've never hurt myself, ever.

So, in the past few weeks, I've been snurfing a fair amount on my one property. It's got a hill section maybe 100 yards. The private road was good until it froze over and got slicker than snot. Also I made a mistake by waxing the board which made it very hard to ride. After the wax wore off it was back to riding without slipping out from under me.
I just refinished it, sanded it a little on the bottom then shellac, which is the original finish. Two coats with a light sanding in between. Looks great. Did a minor repair at the front where it had delaminated with some wood glue and clamped it back tight.

i don't but will try to get one of the board soon.
the bottom of the board now is pretty sweet, i tried it out yesterday on the driveway. pretty crusty snow very icy and some spots with dirt and it busted on through. the shellac was definitely the ticket. we had freezing rain and crusty top with a foot of powder underneath doesn't work too well.

i just looked up a "snurfboard". Apparently its an old skool snowboard witu no bindings. Pretty interesting. I would be afraid to lose that board if i ate shit on the slopes

Nah, you hang onto a leash which keeps the board around. The board weighs maybe 4 lbs. and when you fall typically goes away and downhill. Not having bindings can lead to slip offs but also prevent getting tweaked ankles or knees.
