sounds like b.s. infrared and camera's and stuff like that would still be needed which are all self contained
sounds like they just want to track peoples movements

the majority of accidents are caused by illegal behavior or inattention, most deaths are caused by guess what speed and speed alone

If they figure out a way to fully encrypt the channels used to communicate between the car and the network, they might stand a chance i suppose? that is, until quantum computing fully reaches it's supposed potential and renders all current encryption standards obsolete, right?

someday Die Hard 4 will actually be a reality...making that shitty movie somewhat prophetic, and it'll be retro.

This.  All modern cars have bluetooth and USB connections to your phone anyway.

I think this is a good thing, a necessary step to automating vehicles

As far as truckers go, there will be decades to transition

I operate under the assumption that if it can be hooked up to a network and programmed, it can be hax0r'd

How do you feel about having telemetry of this nature in your car? clearly it will be a required thing in the future, and it allows for further peeking into the lives other people under the guise of "well it keeps people safe"

As someone who has never gotten my driver's license primarily due to disability,
and who lives in an area with very poor availability of public transportation,
the prospect of this sort of automation is pretty enticing to me.

There are some interesting ambitions involved.

The statistics on traffic and commuting are kind of wowing.
This talk has a number of the potential ideas people want to make use of -- the sort of train/bus that splits apart while driving was particularly thought-provoking to me.

The threat of hacking is certainly real though, and could lead to some pretty odd or potentially dangerous situations.

I would rather see all new cars have an interlock system installed.  no pass the breathalyzer, no start your car.

Even though there a plenty of dunces who don't belong on the road, I think a driverless car mandate would be retarded. I personally enjoy driving.

Insurance companies will stop allowing humans to drive before it becomes illegal

Yeah the bar is set very low.

It's bizarre how much people worry about incredibly rare causes of death like terrorist attacks and spree shootings, while the constant carnage on the roads is pretty much accepted as a given.

Right, but when the technology exists and is ubiquitous among every car on the road, there will be few compelling reasons to keep cars 'analog' beyond allowing them to go into manual mode for emergency or off road reasons. I don't think it'll be instant, but within our lifetimes.

30 years it will at least be on the table as a political issue. Cigarettes too with vaping becoming popular, though I don't know if cigarettes themselves will be illegal in our lifetimes.

It's a great idea.

It's also a little 1984. But I carry a cellphone with GPS on it everywhere I go so...

that would be great, then nothing would get to the stores it's supposed to go to, it
will all rot in warehouses and trucks that are out of fuel would be clogging the
interstates
