Building my first guitar
    #23923308 - 12/13/16 05:02 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

So I finally have most of the stuff I need and I will be starting it very soon, here are pics of what I have so far:

Pic 1 is the unfinished body + neck and pickups I plan to put into it.

Pic 2 is a closeup of the pickups, from top to bottom they are: Humbucker sized P90, classic style single coil, and a Shadow active EQ humbucker.

Pic 3 shows the variety pack of sandpaper I bought, has sizes from 100 or so to 2000 and should last me a long time :awesomenod: also the blue woodstain and shellac finish I will use

Pic 4 is a closeup of the shellac which is a resin made from insects, I will dissolve some in alcohol and brush it on after sanding + staining the wood for it's finish.

I still have to buy the tuners and bridge + a few other random things but I have most of the stuff I need to get started putting it together at least.

Bonus pics, one of my favorite guitars which I just cleaned the fretboard of:

This is how it was before after a long time of neglect:

I scrubbed it down with "lemon oil" which is probably just scented/ colored mineral oil, cleaned most the grime off and slicked it up and now it plays much better.

More bonus pics of the rosewood fretboard I also cleaned on my cheap SG special:

I will update this once I get to work finishing and putting this baby together, I am super excited!

Very cool project! I can't say that I've ever seen anyone put shellac on a guitar. Mostly just urethane. Did you cut and route the body yourself?

I did not cut the route thankfully as I don't have the tools and would have probably botched it. I will need to drill the holes for the potentiometers though.

I also have to drill the holes for the bolt on neck which I am a bit intimidated by, for now I need to work on finishing it though.

I did a fair amount of research on finishes and settled on shellac after reading a lot of good things about it. It seems easy to use and is natural. It can be used to french polish guitars which is where you slowly paint on a bunch of thin layers of shellac dissolved in alcohol. It comes out looking very natural and beautiful and you can get it thick enough to be a bit protective.

Here are a few examples of how it looks:

The last one probably has a gloss layer over top which is what gives it that glassy look, I will probably aim more for the first 2 though.

Any reason you haven't? I would love to craft my own body/ neck one day to truly make my own instrument but putting one together will tide me over for now.

I got the neck and body so cheap that I will be able to pimp it out and still keep in within a reasonable budget.

You can get that glassy look through sanding and can be done with pretty much any clear finish that can be built up in layers (meaning something like Tung Oil wouldn't work, at least not for this process) and the "finish" doesn't matter (satin, gloss, semi-gloss, doesn't matter, those only apply to the finish if it's allowed to dry and not altered). I usually put down 2-3 coats before I start sanding just so I have more finish to work with and am not just sanding away the entire clear coat. After I have the first 2-3 coats on I lightly hand sand with 220 grit and put down another layer and repeat this process as many times as it takes to get a perfectly flat finish. If you're having to sand too much and are getting close to sanding away the entire clear coat, then you have to put down a new layer and continue. Once you have a perfectly flat finish you can start working your way up through the grits. After 220 I go to wet sanding and start at 320, sand until it's all uniform in sheen. Sometimes at this point I may put on one additional thin layer of finish depending on how much sanding I had to do to move onto the 320. Then it's 800, 1500 and 2000 making sure to get it uniform each time. From there you can keep moving up in grits until you reach your desired result, but I use automotive swirl remover and buff it all out. After that it's just a coating of paste wax.

There are products out there that are designed to eliminate this entire process and make it go a lot faster but they have their own pitfalls and can be expensive/difficult to find. All of this stuff is cheap and readily available, plus I like the process of doing it.

Also that picture probably doesn't represent the dried/finished product. Most all finishes will look like that when first applied and still wet. Once they dry most lose that extreme shine.

I just recently thought of it. The cnc machine is at my job, but lately I've been incredibly busy so far this semester to do that many projects.
I could start the body if I can find a cad drawing for a gibson sg and put together the wood.

Wow that is really cool. I believe you are now called a luthier. I was familiar with the first 2 pickups you mentioned, but didn't know the third one, the dual coil EQ.

Yeah I should have clarified but there isn't a huge difference.

I will be doing a bit more then assembling actually as I still need to finish it and work on a few parts of the neck and body before I out them together finally.

Thanks, I don't think I would qualify as a luthier yet though

The third pickup is a vintage German product that is no longer made I believe, it cost more then this entire guitar so far  and I have been saving it for a special guitar it would go perfectly in. It is kind of the foundation of the build actually as wiring and body selection are specially for it.

Shadow guitars with the EQbucker go for like 1-2k generally as they are very rare.

What is your job? You can find deals on wood online if you can't get it locally.

Definitely should give it a try when you have the time! Would be very rewarding.
