where is soot coming from?

So when I make agar transfers I first dip my scalpel in denatured alcohol, wipe it off with paper towel, then flame sterilize with propane torch, then cool it by making a few swipes in the corner of the receiving petri dish. When i make my swipes there's been black particles that come off in the agar. I know its not from the alcohol, could it be the blade starting to degrade? My blades are carbon steel. I don't see how this could cause a problem with contamination but is it possible?

I don't see why denatured shouldn't burn clean. Maybe the constant heating and cooling starts eating away at the blade and little chunks of metal start falling off.

"i flame sterilize with a propane torch" <<<< Thats the reason why. Its not a clean flame. Denatured alchoal in a little alchoal lamp leaves no soot on the syringe, scalpel, watever. Its what RR uses and me as well. Never leaves soot in my filters when i inoculate.

I'm sure but an alcohol lamp would take forever to heat up a scalpel wouldn't it? How long do you have to flame it?

No, to get it red hot it would take as a long as a lighter.

I use a propane torch and don't get soot. You're burning something. Perhaps there's leftover mycelium on your blade, or some agar. As it burns it turns black and splooges on your blade.

Nope it takes like 7 seconds to turn red hot. Its wat RR uses in his videos

My first transfers are always sootless with my butane torch (creme brulee torch). After a while I have some soot, because after a couple of transfers there are small agar pieces leftover.
Don't worry, soot doesn't make problems at all.
