Trump talks about canceling the F-35 -- should we?
    #23922620 - 12/13/16 01:09 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Trump sent out a tweet that the F-35 costs are out of control, and that billions of dollars can and will be saved after January 20.  The F-35 program, as you may have heard, has cost over $1.5 trillion since the program's inception nineteen years ago, which is nothing short of outrageous.  Even today, the fleet is still not fully flight-ready and has not been officially deployed, with the obvious inference being that they want to spend at least several more billions on developing it further.

The question is, since we have invested so much in it, should we see it through or not?  It would be pretty stupid to pay all that money and then cancel the program right as the finished product is about to be deployed.

Moreover, do you think Trump would be able to defeat the Military-Industrial interests in Washington on this?  The Republican party is deeply tied to it, and of course they are the reason we're in this mess in the first place.

Here's an interesting tidbit from a Salt Lake Tribune article:

Quote:

Grazier acknowledged that canceling the F-35 would be an almost impossible political task. The program has components in about 350 congressional districts, Grazier said, contending that the Pentagon designed the contracting that way to gain political support.

"I have literally had [congressional] staffers tell me that, 'Look, we cannot oppose the F-35 because it's worth a thousand jobs for us,' " Grazier said. Trump or his Secretary of Defense nominee James Mattis, if he is confirmed, could lessen the cost by reducing the number of F-35s the military plans to buy from Lockheed. Grazier pointed to 2009, when then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates reduced the number of F-22s the Air Force planned to purchase.

The question is whether it's really only a few billion from completion?

Regardless, if Congress wants jobs, maybe the money can be redirected to the infrastructure projects Trump's talked about that would benefit not only the people who work on them, but the communities they serve.  The F-35 only helps the people who work on them.

Liberals have been bitching about military spending for decades

They'll still hate trump

It's not about money or the military

They hate America and their lack of support for trump, even if he does cut military spending by billions, proves it

No

Anyhow to be on topic of the thread and not troll.

They are just going to spend even more for a new model of airplane.  America only wins the wars they haven't lost due to air superiority.

The Marines or Navy just ordered more F-18's.  So whatever that means.

I think they should triple the price of selling F-22's and F-35's to other countries.

It's just another example of the abuse of the US taxpayer for a military contractor.

The US is broke, we can't afford these projects forever. Like Fal said, it offers very little utility once it gets built.

How so?  These advanced jets have been on the wish list since Windows rolled out.  They're just gonna build something more expensive to replace it if they scrap it.

Maybe reduce the size of the order and renegotiate the contracts, the US taxpayer shouldn't bear the burden of all the higher manufacturing costs.

US taxpayer?

I thought the Gov gets most money via Chinese loans.

That would be incorrect.

the f-35 is a disaster. it can't even out-turn or bank an F-16 - the very strike fighter it's supposed to be replacing. also, we are losing contracts for the f-35 from other countries iirc

It's not supposed to replace the F16, that's the F22.

It's for the Marines and Navy.  Marines need vertical take off.  The F35 is supposed to replace the harrier.
