Make under 10k a year, miserable, please help.
    #23922047 - 12/13/16 09:43 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

They say money doesn't buy happiness. I say money buys the things that make me happy. No money, no honey.

Life sucks without money. I'm currently a janitor working 25-30 hours a week for 8 dollars an hour. I bring home less than 200 a week. Wife works at same place day shift factory job, same pay/hours, so combined we bring home 400 bucks a week. That ain't shit. I'm one of the smartest people I know. Graduated high school top 5 academics. I try hard. Harder than my co workers that make much more than I do, yet they get the praise. It's very mentally taxing. I'm putting in 110%, and not getting shit out of it.

I don't have a lot of skills. Grew up pretty sheltered I guess. A good idea would be to go to school. But for what? I don't wanna save lives. I don't wanna fix heaters and air conditioners. Etc. I don't know what I want to do, or am capable of doing. To make it all worse, we have an 18 month old baby. It's two weeks before Christmas. Don't have a tree. Very few gifts for little man. It's just real depressing. I'm very much in a funk and don't know how to deal with/get out of it. I love my family, but the money just isn't there. It's not even close. My cars as old as I am. Gotta jump it off every day. Can't afford to get work done on it, let alone a high car payment with no credit. Furniture is used hand me downs. Just don't have anything. I'm lucky to get one meal in a day. I weigh 125lbs, and steadily dropping. I see so many people around with an IQ of probably less than 12 making bank and getting to eat nice food and drive nice cars etc. life isn't fair I know, but damnit I should get more than what I'm getting.

In retrospect, I should've waited to start a family, but I can't go back so.
At the end of the day, it's all about the money. Any tips/advice?

Thanks for reading. Appreciate any help.

I know a guy who pretty much sucked at school.  Not the dumbest guy I knew but even the dumbest one has a refrigeration repair job working for the owner who they have a weird thing going.  Anyhow the 2nd dumbest worked at a machine shop.  He worked his way into sales.  He then moved to a new company that supposedly does aerospace contracts and other things.  I think he is in sales there too.  My mom worked a shitty job and sometimes two.  She got into sales for snap on and travelled a lot.  She out sold the guys and easily made over six figures.  Sales is hard, always got out sell everyone and the market forecast.  But you can make a lot of money of commission.

Basically slave away at a low level position for a company that does sales.  Work your way up!

Don't feel tied to that job since it is not providing enough, start looking for the other things.

A lot of blue collar work is well paid in the USA, don't knock down things like being an electrician or gardener and etc. Going to a community college to get training in something like that will prove worthwhile in the long run.

Costco starts at 12 dollars an hour, so if there is one check it out, even if its providing food samples, you will be better off.

Depending on where you are, there might be a market for edibles such as oysters and stuff like that, doing it proper would require an investment, but it is not out of the question.

Don't fret about the little things such as presents and trees, your kid is too young to even have a notion of it yet. Give him love, and a caring environment and build towards your future, and things will fall into place.

Don't be afraid to be bold, or ask for help, be honest about how you want to provide a better life for your family, and I think some options might open up. Just don't give into your current situation.

Also: do apply for welfare, you are the proper candidate for it, even if it's temporary. Also check out food banks.  there is nothing from for seeking help, especially when that is to make your conditions at home better.

Learn electrical skills or plumbing skills and make some real $$.  Nobody really cares how smart you are, although with electrical it might help.  I've never seen any rocket scientist plumbers, however.  I have seen some huge bills for very little work from them.

One thing for sure, you gotta work on that attitude, the world's a bitch but nobody will want to hear your sad story.  Gotta be upbeat and positive, maybe your negativity is what's holding you back right now at work.  Few will care how hard you work, they only care how much you fit in and how much they like you.  Well maybe the big boss cares but otherwise it's all about being the suck up nice guy.  Often the guy who busts ass but everyone dislikes is held back or worse.  Maybe you are making the other guys look bad by working too hard!  I get the sense for all your smarts you never learned how to fit in and maybe kiss a little ass.  Not fun, but gotta be done.  Maybe you'll feel better once the checks start rolling in.

Anyway, best wishes, sorry you are struggling, keep your chin up.

I have one word for you.  Focus.

You could be the smartest, most talented dude in the world.  But if you can’t focus your efforts, you will never realize your potential.  And you have a LOT of potential.

You say you’re the smartest person you know; you need to change that.  If you don’t know people who are smarter than you, how will you ever learn something new?  Not to be arrogant, but I am pretty fucking smart too, still, I have friends who are much smarter than I am; and I constantly tap their ability to improve myself.

You say you don’t want to save lives, or fix heaters, or air conditioners..  How the hell do you know?  Have you done any of those things?  I’ll be real with you man.  If you talk yourself out of every opportunity, you will suddenly wake up one day, 55 years old, and you will still be a fucking janitor.  Nothing wrong with being a janitor, but is that what you want for your life?

Here’s my advice.  Fuck what you “want”, and fuck your “dream job”.  Those things exist for some people, because they know what they want from a very young age, and they become successful because they focus on a dream.  That isn’t you, and it isn’t me.  If you were one of those people, you would know by now.  Focus hasn’t come naturally for you, so you have to make it happen.

In 2010 I was a college drop out in the middle of the recession; I had no job, and no money.  I lived at my grandma’s house for fuck sake.  My friends were all doing much better than me, and I couldn’t figure it out, I was smarter than those fuckers, why were they doing so well and I wasn’t?  Focus man, they had focus and perseverance.

The day I decided to say fuck it to my hopes and dreams, (which changed monthly), and instead focus my energy on becoming valuable, is they day my life turned around.  Not right away of course. I worked my ass off for years developing a skill set that earns me a six figure salary today.  And it’s in a field that I would have never thought I would be interested in.  I focused on this field because I knew there were good jobs to be had, not because it was something that I wanted to do.

Our generation was socially programmed to find our purpose, in order to uncover our value.  But guess what; our parents got it wrong.  Instead, focus on creating value, and you will find purpose in places you never expected.

You wrote, "I don't know what I want to do, or am capable of doing."

If you can honestly reply with an answer to that problem, you'll be fine.

If you don't know what you want to do in life, then life will get hard.  In your case, its already pretty tough.  Having something to want will drive you.  It will give you the determination to progress and move forward.  Without having a goal, you'll probably never have much peace.

You say that you're not sure what you're capable of?  Well, if you want something, what is it that you need to do get it?    I know this may sound strange and cheesy but if you want to be a basket weaver or an astrophysicist, both need direction and a path.

It sounds to me (and I'm going to sound like a high school guidance counselor here but..)  it sounds like you've got the brain, you just need the direction.

I hope that you find your way.

Lana

Yeah OP, a lot of blue-collar jobs pay real well. Plumbers make $100K, construction, there's a whole lot of options out there. Electrical engineering too, but AFAIK you have to go to school for 2 years or so and do a trade on top of that to get into that industry.

As for your lady, is she interested in anything like hairdressing or massage therapy or being an aesthetician or something?

Having a baby complicates things, in terms of how long you can go to school. But trades like these you can basically do short-term minimal schooling for 6 months or so, and then just apply to get a license.

You guys could also bartend or waitress. If you work in a busy restaurant or bar, you can easily make $20+/hour on busy nights and weekends, and the best part is the money you will be making will be tax-free.

Working for the post office starts at $13-$17 an hour, and you are working for the government so you probably get amazing benefits.
You can be one of those phone operators on the end of a 911 hotline, and same deal, government so great benefits.
Hell, if you have a knack for art, you could even become a tattoo artist. If your artwork is really high-quality and good, you can charge clients $100 an hour.

You know, you should seriously consider being a janitor for a university or for a school district. Apparently the janitors at universities are unionized, so their salaries are VERY high and competitive. Believe it or not, I knew a janitor at my college that was making $50K. And apparently if he stayed in that job for at least 20 years, his salary would have increased to $80K!!!! And he would have gotten a pension and all these other kickbacks that ordinary civilian jobs don't have.

Seriously, you have experience as a janitor, if I were you I would be vetting for one of those unionized custodian positions at a university.

There is a lot of legal code with professional jobs.  My Grandpa was a plumber and didn't get rich.  He did get by and Grandma also worked.  Not rich people by any means.  But Grandpa knows a lot of code for plumbing and very good with his hands.

He mostly worked for people that knew him.  Word gets around when someone works for less money.  Grandpa also spent a lot of time talking and running around not planning well.  Forgetting tools and stuff.

He worked for himself and trained 2 young guys on the job.  Those guys still know Grandpa and the 1 is a big guy for a larger plumbing company.  But he's an alcoholic and got a DUI.  Can't lose your license and do well at a job that requires being somewhere.

Op, have you considered working for Uber? If you already have a car, this is a good option for you to supplement your income while you search for a better paying job. I have friends who drive for Uber who say if you work fridays or Saturday late at night you can make $30 to $40 an hour easily. If you already have a car you can pretty much start immediately and you don't have to invest any money into a license or anything.

Well, when you take off the veil, and you begin to see the world as it is, not how you want it to be, the walls of the pretentious reality you live in come crashing down.

There is a reason why Celebrities, ballers, pro athletes etc. are smashing hot attractive women. It is a case of hypergamy on steroids. Money buys you freedom. So, the more resources you have, the more access you have to EVERYTHING (vagina, travel, cars, clothes, lifestyle etc.).

There is a correlation on how attractive a woman is and her man's net worth. There is a reason for this.

Dude, you gotta take drastic action. What people are realizing is that, the middle class income, the well paying jobs, a lot of the manufacturing, and others have gone over seas due to outsourcing. The time of waiting till retirement, having a fucking stroke or getting diagnosed with cancer, and then, years of your shitty job were all for nothing. Yes, have your 401k, invest 10% on every fucking dollar minimum, refrain from purchases on credits, on 20% credit cards, stop buying stupid shit, and begin exploring your consciousness. Start reading things to help you on your journey.

There comes a point where you just snap, the pain just forces you into transcending, and you have nothing to hold you back. Provide a service or offer a product. Sell shit. What can you do a s a service? I have friends that do poker, internet marketing, fb marketing, management consulting, web design, graphics, multimedia, etc. and it allows them to travel. One dude bought a house with his internet marketing business. He rents out his basement to students. He travels the world. He also comes up with new start ups. Some take. Some do not. Start throwing enough shit at a wall, something begins to stick.

YouTube Tim Ferris 4hout work week! Its not about your hourly salary. If you made 40k a year working 60hr weeks + commute everyday would get played the fuck out. If you made 30k working 6hours a week from your laptop, you would quit your shitty job. Good luck man.

Uhhh yes I'm pretty sure he needs it. $10K wouldn't even cover rent, food, and car expenses. And that's the bare minimum you need to survive. There's also health insurance and clothes and other necessities that might pop up. If OP wants any decent quality of life he's going to have to at least double his income.

OP I would seriously consider applying for food stamps and Medicaid or other government aid in the meantime until you start making more money.

It takes awhile to qualify for the good hits but $6/ hr is considered the minimum acceptable wage by most users. I've been lucky enough to swing up to $15/ hr for a couple of hours at a time. It's no fulltime gig, but it pays for my weed and adventures while attending college... and it's on my own schedule

Might be useful to OP in a pinch.

It also exposes the terrible quality of most academic surveys. Like myself, you might come to realize you should be making the surveys instead of filling them out.

Best of luck OP!

amazing !  Im in a similar boat.  I'll give it a shot .  Thanks for sharing brother.
