I figured it might be. Is it hopeless because it lacks the intact stem or just because it's a little brown mushroom? I'm a noob looking for ways to improve my identification. Taking a spore print now. Not sure if that will help with this one.

Yes without seeing the whole mushroom it's hard to make a good guess. The spore print will help, it always does. It's also helpful to know the habitat.
