Hello.
Found a few of these on downed oaks. Recently downed. South east coastal region. Just rained last night, temps in 60s.

Pretty sure it's a heiricium but idk which species if it matters.
And is this particular edible?

Hericium erinaceus without a doubt. It's in really good shape too. Should be delicious. I always assumed they took a long time to colonize. Is this a Matthew tree? I'm in Bluffton/Hilton head. I need to get out in The forest.

You gotta be shitting me so am I. I'm not really sure what type of tree to be honest, some sort of oak I think but I don't see any branches connected to it for a leaf identification.
Hey man after last nights rain there out bro. Maybe one day we can hunt together.
Found two of these fellas on Hilton head today.

Yea I went ahead and grabbed the biggest one I'll go back for the other one tomorrow maybe.
Anyone got any good minimal recipes? Was just going to saute it with butter and some seasoning. Any sauces go good with this mush?
Thanks for the IDs.

Sauté in a tiny amount of olive oil until browned, add a little salt and black pepper and then add in a small amount of butter or bacon fat at the end for a final sear. Sublime.

Sounds great. I'm cooking pork chops... It's not Bacon persae but what do you think using the pork grease instead of Bacon? Thanks

Okay so. There was orange little bugs on some of it, I cut it into pieces and rinsed everything off with a tiny bit of water. Let the pieces soak in lemon for a few minutes to draw out more bugs, then rinsed everything thoroughly.
Sauted pieces in a pan with olive oil. Then did the glaze with the pork juice.

Wow the flavor is delicious. Tastes kind of like Asian teriyaki beef or something with undertones of lemon vinegar
Absolutely delicious. Will do it again no doubt.

That looks tasty. I found one before, but it was on the forest floor. Things like that seem to be a magnet for morons that just want to rip them out, simply for being there, unfortunately.

Yes. You may or may not get another flush this season but that log will produce seasonally for a few years.
